“Great Lodge Host!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

Checking into the campground, you will go to the lodge building. If you are lucky, Gordon will be working there. Gordon is very friendly and helpful. He directed us to a great pizza joint in town, told us about the park and surrounding areas, and answered all our questions. And we had many questions, since we were touring from California. So here's to Gordon!

“Great base camp for wonderful hiking!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

We stayed at site 50 which is next to the stream and close to the highway. The noise from the highway was very distracting the first night (we had not hiked yet), the trick to getting a good nights sleep is to hike all day so you can pass out at night and sleep through the noise!

It is a very nice campground, with more than adequate shower facilities. It is smack dab in the middle of the notch, and well worth a visit.

“Truck noise all day and night”

I am sad to say that this campground and even the 1 hour hike up to beautiful Lonesome Lake are permanently invaded by the constant sound of trucks going down 93 all day and night. I thought that since I chose the site farthest from the road it would be okay, but I should have known better. I can warn the rest of you. You will not get that relaxing feeling of "getting away" from civilization. If you are looking for car camping, it is worth it to find somewhere on route 302 instead of 93, such as Dry River campground in Crawford Notch. Or, if you would like to go backcamping further up into the Pemigewasset Wilderness, Mount Garfield has a great moderate trail, amazing 360 views, and tent platforms near the summit. If you do decide to camp at Lafayette due to the convenient location near trailheads, make sure you bring a mattress pad because the campsites are all GRAVEL. It is a shame because the staff were very helpful and the other amenities are fine.

“Great Spot for Tent Camping”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2010

The is a great tent camping spot- sites are rustic (no electric), wooded and secluded. There is a camp store offering trail maps, wood, ice and other supplies plus you''ll need to stop here to get quarters for the showers. The main bath house has toilets, sinks with cold water, and coin operated hot showers. We occupied sites 86 and 88 which were spacious, quiet and secluded. Site 88 was especially nice. The only downside to this campground is the proximity to Rt 93, with its constant background traffic noise. Honestly, I only noticed it when we went to sleep, and even then it was kind of like listening to waves at the beach.

I disagree with the reviewer below- I found this campground extremely quiet and the almost all the sites are nicely wooded. The only exception might be the loop with sites 1-14, which were more open, but had a nice field for kids to play in. I would also avoid the sites closest to the shower house. We had no problems with using the coin operated showers, though several of the stalls were out of order during our visit.

From the campground, you can hike up the Lonesome Lake Trail (about an hour and a half walk up a pretty steep, rocky trail). At the top of the trail is a beautiful lake and you can stop into the AMC Hut. On the day we hiked up, we got caught in a heavy rain and were glad to take shelter here. Bring some money with you to buy fresh baked goods, hot drinks, hot soup and freshly baked bread. You can hang out here and play board games and cards too!

Another spot to visit near the campground is Echo Lake, a small quiet lake off Route 93 with a sandy beach and canoe rentals. Admission is $4 for the day.

“Cramped and no privacy, but great location.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2010

Great location to get to all the good hiking spots in the area, however I don't think this campground is suited for longer stays. the camp sites are all crammed together and there's hardly and trees to aid to your privacy. we spent most of our time hiking but when we got back to the camp site spent most of our time listening to screaming children from 6:00 in the morning till they passed out around 10 which happens to be the quiet hour for the camp ground. the showers are coin operated, and while using one my husbands time ran out while he was still covered in soap, putting in a couple more quarters to start it up didn't work, it had just stopped working. The man at the service counter wouldn't give us our dollar back instead he offered a quarter to get it started, but thats why I had sunk a dollar into it to begin with and he had already dried off and gotten dressed. There was trash strewn across our site and half burnt logs that wouldn't fit into the fire pit. The fire wood we bought from the campground cost $12.00 for two bundles, and it was so wet we couldn't even use half of it.
