To start, I was not a guest at the hotel. I was, however, a potential guest. My car had some minor issues while traveling through the area around 5 pm on a Saturday and I was forced to stop at the nearby truck stop. My alternator had quit and my battery was subsequently dead. On top of that I had let my cell phone run down so I was stranded with no way to call anyone for assistance and no way to charge my phone.
I went to the hotel knowing that most have a large assortment of cell phone chargers that are left behind. So after the desk clerk came out from the manager's apartment behind the office area I asked if I could borrow one. I was told I could not - apparently the 'manager' was not in and they were locked up. I stepped outside to think over my options and decided to ask about a room for the night.
I came back in and was greeted this time by a second shabbily dressed desk clerk. He quoted me a ridiculous rate, something I feel he was doing because of my situation. I was considering it though, since I thought it might have been my only option. It was then that I spotted the lobby courtesy computer. Realizing I had a usb cord in the car that could charge my phone from the computer I asked if they would let me. I was told no, that the computer was for guests only.
Now I am not a scary individual. I was clean shaven, dressed nicer than either of the two clerks, and I was very polite. They both had the opportunity to help me. Neither one asked if they could call me a tow truck, if they could get me a cab, if they could help me find the number for a parts store or mechanic. They tried to extort me for a ridiculously high rate given their occupancy and the what they offered. And last but not least they didn't let me do the one thing that would have required no effort on their part but would have fixed my situation.
In other words, they were bad people. I would never treat anyone that way. I actually manage a hotel in Columbia, MO, and if I found out any of my employees treated someone that way there would be serious repercussions. So to sum it up, the hotel itself seemed fairly nice. Modern decor, clean lobby. Fresh paint on the outside. But i would never, ever do business with people like that.
