After flying into southern Illinois, we rented a car and drove to Kirksville for my wife's graduation. The parking lot had only a couple of cars at 10 in the evening.
The lady at the desk told us we were all set for two rooms. We had only booked one. She kept insisting we'd booked two rooms an that we were on the hook for both of them on a night when the hotel was practically deserted. I tried to explain that, even if we had booked two rooms, it was obviously a mistake as it was only the two of us checking in. She kept saying there was nothing she could do and we were stuck.
When we quietly said we were going to find another place to stay, the clerk's reply was, "Why would you do that? You're going to be stuck paying for three rooms instead of two!" Her attitude seemed to be: we have your money, what else are you going to do? The charge didn't show up on my wife's account until later that same evening.
We stayed at a Super 8 across the road with no problem. It was nicer and only about 10 bucks more. We challenged the Knights Inn charges through the credit card company and eventually got a refund for both of the rooms that we didn't use.
