“Historic, Intriguing, Delicious!”

First let me say that I am from the KC area, and I *love* this city. So when my fiance was coming in town one weekend and we decided to stay somewhere downtown for a 'night out', I wanted it to be really awesome and show the true charm of the city, so after long deliberations of where to stay, I gave in to my love for Kansas City history and chose The Savoy (paired with The Savoy Grill next door for dinner) over the typical, run-of-the-mill hotels you can find just about anywhere. On the outside, The Savoy looked like most turn-of-the-century brick buildings that make up the Downtown, Crossroads, and the West Bottoms areas of Kansas City, and its low-key entrance threw us off for a moment, but when we walked in we both felt as if we were walking back in time.

There are so many aspects of this hotel that have been saved and restored, from the mail slots at the entrance to the mural on the wall that uses mirrors to look like it is back-lit. We couldn't stop looking around; it was beautiful! The staff was very helpful and courteous from the moment we walked in to the moment we checked out. I will say, we got on the elevator and decided it was small and kind of scary and joked about having to go one at-a-time so we wouldn't plummet to our deaths (but we survived!).

We walked into our room and were amazed. It was huge (the deluxe victorian suite). The view (facing north) was amazing from our 6th-floor room. We could see the Garment District, River Market, the new KC Icon Bridge, North Kansas City, Murray Rail Yard, the Missouri River and so much of the amazing city I have fallen in love with. It was a beautiful day so we opened all eight or so of the windows and just enjoyed the room. The bed was comfortable, the room was spacious, the bathroom was spacious (and really cool), the half bath was a perfect addition, and the fireplace added that comfy charm we were looking for in a room.

We soon decided we wanted to explore - the hotel is still very much being renovated and as 2 civil engineers/history geeks, we were very excited to see the in-progress portions of the hotel. Many of the in-progress rooms were unlocked and we just did our own self-guided tour. We found a corridor that was completely unfinished and unlocked with what seemed to be hopeful conference rooms; many people may find this corridor unacceptable, but we found it intriguing and adventurous! and we thought it added to the character of the hotel, revealing what the whole thing used to look like, and how far the hotel has come. Some of the rooms had holes in the floors leading straight down to the level below (probably should have been locked rooms - we still thought it was cool). This being said THIS IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO BRING THE FAMILY AT ALL!! Not safe for wandering kids at all!

We went to dinner at The Savoy Grill - it was *fabulous*. When we came back to our room, we had no problems with the room or noise levels outside or from surrounding rooms. (The hotel is located on the north end of Downtown, far enough away from "all the action" that it isn't too loud - for being downtown, that is - but it is within walking distance of some of Kansas City's *coolest* (as in "neatest") restaurants and bars: The Majestic is around the corner, The Phoenix is directly across the street, River Market is just down the street...and even walking to Power & Light isn't that bad, or cab would be really cheap).

Breakfast the next morning was amazing. You turn in your order the night before (choosing 5 items from a comprehensive menu, each portion of which would serve as my entire normal breakfast - so come hungry) and you go into the breakfast room in the morning. Our server was really nice, very attentive, gave us our space as we ate but carried on a conversation with my *very* talkative and *very* inquisitive fiance when he wanted to know more about the hotel, not to mention, it was probably the best breakfast I've ever had. (previous reviews say that meat was poorly cooked, but I couldn't put my bacon down, it was sooo good.)

Other than the scary elevator, we loved absolutely everything about this hotel. We WILL be coming back because there is not another place in Kansas City we would rather stay on our wedding night.

(plus, you can't beat the price!! ESPECIALLY with the breakfast!)

PS - legend is, a couple of rooms are haunted, if you're in to that kind of thing...we didn't see anything though.

Room Tip: From what I've read, I'd suggest calling beforehand and making sure you have a room that is...

“Stompin' at the Savoy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

This stay was really out of a movie set. The Savoy, famous for Benny Goodman's Album "Stompin at the Savoy," has maintained its mystery and glamour and has not changed a thing in its kitchen, in 51 years, according to staff. So, one can order Lamb with Artichoke Hearts, Smoked Salmon and Caviar, Crab Crepes, or even Veal Veloute for breakfast, from a choice of 32 items. This is the hotel frequented by Harry Truman (he had his own booth in the dining room). Houdini performed here. My room included a clawfoot tub, china teacups and a 4 poster bed. The only sad thing was that there were not many guests. This hotel is an honorable relic, for those who like a bit of mystery, some history and a ghost on the 5th floor. Terrific restaurants are down the street and first rate jazz is found around the corner. This is a must see in Kansas City before it gets changed into a boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a clawfoot tub.

“Simply Wonderful”

An outstanding slice of Americana. Built as the lodging of choice for the Railroad and Cattle Barons, this hotel retains many, actually most, of it's original furnishings. The tavern, including the hand painted murals depicting scenes from the settling of the west, which surround entire wall, as well as the leather bar stools, have been in place since the building opened. If you are at all interested in the history fo the west, you owe it to yourself to have dinner, have a drink, spend the night in this wonderful establishment.

“amazing! This place is not for the meek. Breakfast is the best!”

As a photographer, I was looking for a place of value where I could take my viewers for a ride. I found it here. Walk in to the Savoy and its like a trip back in time. I've had my fair share of outlandish faked themes in the best places in Las Vegas, Its amazing to find such a wonderful thing here in my own home town. This place is REAL. Its something rare, raunchy, scary, but amazingly clean! I spent a wonderful night, very comfortable, very relaxed, and very quiet.

And then, there is breakfast.... OMG! Ten at night and my model says, "Have you seen the menu!" We went down to the front desk and spoke with the clerk. We asked him what we could order and he said, "Here is the menu. Order what you like, just don't kill yourself." He wasn't kidding. You can get carried away looking at their menu. This was at no extra cost. On top of that, when you actually get your food, its overwhelming! They don't skimp, and it tastes great. You will wish you had a larger stomach to scarf it all down.

The service, Hotel Staff, everybody was extremely nice. They really do make you feel welcome.

Bottom line, I highly recommend this place for those looking for something different. Oh yeah and... try the lobster bisque in the morning. Kinda makes you not want to go home lol.

“A Moment in Time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

The Hotel can be a portal in time. My wife and I have stayed in hotels throughout the US and Europe. We lived in a 1700's house in London. If you want to experience a Victorian atmosphere, this is the hotel for it! Built in 1888 it is authentic Victorian era. The lobby doubles as a party room and has aged wine bottles stored behind leaded glass in handcrafted wooden cupboards. I took photos of them with my iPhone to download and print. I will frame them and put them up in my home "pub". Above the marble topped front desk is a 12 foot diameter leaded stained glass dome skylight. Just beautiful. That skylight has illuminated the front desk for well over a hundred years. The 6 year old Hilton I recently visited was full of dust as the electricians were drilling and wiring to replace the lighting. Apparently, the high cost halogen bulbs are no longer "in". The room was wonderfully redone with great attention to detail. My only complaint is that it had a TV. Better if that was hidden in an armoire. Sunday morning we made our way to the private dining area, were greeted by a very polite waiter in a white coat and shown to our seats. I have never had as great of a breakfast, ever. Next to our table was a 6x8 foot mirror that looked like a passage way to the past. Again the room was lit by leaded stained glass outside window/walls. Sounds are a function of the space the waves transverse. The sound of a waiter walking on a stone floor echoing throughout the 16 foot ceilinged room supported by iron wall beams cannot be duplicated in a Marriott. As far as it being haunted. We had stayed at the Hotel Phillips and entering the lobby I heard noise in the silence. Savoy did't echo the past, it lives the past. I personally saw no apparitions and heard no unknown sounds. However, I did encounter various smells in different parts of the hotel. Not odorous smells, real smells perfumes, fresh cut flowers, bread, a fireplace smoking, although the rooms had none. For 3 hours I sat quietly in the leather chair and read. It was a release from the modern world. A moment in time not found in the 21st Century, except at places like the Savoy.

Room Tip: Renovated room.
