We stayed here on the 2nd leg of trip from the West to East of Southern France. After very little info online, no reviews, and a somewhat confusing French-only website (www.soleil-luberon.com) we ended up pleased with our stay. It was a great location, just at the foot of Oppede-le-Vieux and very accessible to other hilltowns like Lacoste, Menerbes, etc. It was very serene and right in the heart of the country, but within walking distance to old Oppede. We walked up (twice) for dinner on our hostess' suggestion, but found the small cafes closed both times. We had to go searching for restaurants afterwards-- in one case we ate at the lovely Table d'hote de Ivana, right outside of town. The property of Les Chenes definetely lended the feeling like you were staying as a guest at the family's house-- their own beach towels and pool toys were strewn around, and it had a very lived-in feel to it. The rooms were small (only 2) but adequate, the bathrooms were very modern (all was re-done within the last 3 years.) Soundproofing was a bit of an issue for the Port Bonheur room, which is directly below the family-friendly gite. We heard kids running around for hours before we got up. Also, I found the rooms to be slightly less clean than I would have hoped, but again, I completely understand that we were in the country and bugs/dust, etc. come with the territory. That said- I am not a bug person-- I found it slightly difficult/hot to sleep in late June/early July with no screens in the windows and no air-conditioning. We had to close the windows there were so many flys/knats/mosquitos, coming in. Either screens or fans/aircon would be helpful for summer travelers. Breakfast was delectible and served on the family's front porch. Delightful and perpetually cheerful Cathy, our hostess, was helpful and charming, if not a bit scattered sometimes. We found Les Chenes to have more rules/contracts, etc than most Chambre d'Hotes we've stayed at-- I'm not sure if they've had some bad experiences before or are just cautious. There is a rental agreement mailed to you prior to staying, and laminated rules posted in the room. That said, everyone was still warm and friendly, and we would recommend it. Overall, 3 nights was a good stay in Oppede, and we were ready to move on. Les Chenes did offer a great price for the region with excellent views of Old Oppede and an adorable pony, Bijoux, out front!
