Located in right downtown St. Paul an only a couple of blocks from the Mississippi river, the Saint Paul Hotel is a historic classic motel well known in the Twin Cities. It is by far the nicest hotel in downtown St. Paul so it's best suited for those traveling on business and needing to work with many of the larger companies that are headquartered, or have large offices, right in downtown St. Paul. It's an older building but magnificently well maintained and when you walk in the lobby you know you are walking into history... literally. I'm not sure of the exactly date but when the St. Paul hotel was built in the early 20th century it was when there were Trolley cars running throughout downtown St. Paul.
The rooms are quite nice, if not a little smaller than some of the newer hotels, but they have an old style charm that is hard to duplicate. There are a few 'quirky' rooms that are located next to the elevators where due to the placement of the elevators the set up of the room is almost in triangle and much smaller, but if you get one of these you can always ask for another to see if they can move you to a nice room.
They have a nice gym on one of the higher floors so that as you are working out you have the most beautiful view.
The staff is top notch and as I have stayed many times I was often recognized if not by name, but with a nice, "Welcome back" when checking in. There is also one of the finest restaurants in downtown St. Paul in the building and another nicer hotel located below the lobby where you can have lunch and breakfast.
There are some larger hotels in the downtown St. Paul area, but none of which have the charm that The St. Paul Hotel does. I've stayed at others, but only when the St. Paul hotel sells out, which it often does which is another good sign of a well run hotel.
