“Excellent Experience”

The Somerset Inn is one of the best hotels we have experienced. The entire staff was most helpful to us during the entirety of our two week stay.
You can't beat the location. Situated across the street from the fashionable Somerset Mall and across the street from the Somerset Apartments which has an excellent walking circle.
The room was very clean and maintained well.
We will definitely stay here again when we visit Michigan from Arizona.

“Nice place - but pricey”

I stayed at the Somerset Inn from January 8, 2012 through January 12, 2012 while moving my son from North Carolina to Michigan. The place is nice and in a great location. I thought it was a lot of money for the room. I paid $119 the first night and $144 the other nights. I think, but I'm not sure, the cost went up because of the International Auto Show (which i didn't know was there when I booked). The room was clean but can use some updates. The bed was hard and, while looking at the mattress and box spring, you could see they were old. It has a restaurant on site and I highly recommend the Chicken Parmesian for $19.99. For what I was paying I would have liked to have had complimentary breakfast. The restaurant does open for breakfast, but I did not try it. Oh yeah, and it is directly across from a huge (pricey) mall. But it was fun walking around even if I couldn't afford anything in it. All in all, I would stay here again. It was a nice place, just a little on the costly side.

Room Tip: I was in room 100 on the bottom floor. It was very quiet. The only concern I had about the first flo...

“Great Location!”

This hotel is just steps away from the nicest mall in Michigan & minutes away from downtown Birmingham. The staff was very friendly, and very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. They helped me choose a restaurant (for my somewhat picky group)! They also have a free business & printing station in the lobby and free wi-fi in rooms! Rooms are very clean and quiet. I enjoyed a nice breakfast in the restaurant. We will stay here for all future shopping trips in Troy!

“Unfortunately this will not be a good review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

I rely heavily on reviews and since the establishment responds, I know they will see this which is the point. I stayed at Somerset Inn on Dec 14 and 15th and was going to stay the 16th as well. This was all for work. I'm from the area and am familiar with all the surroundings. When I got to my room everything was fine. I enjoyed the fridge and the Keurig coffee maker (I knew those would be in the room). I noticed I had an adjoining room. I've had those before at other hotels and can't remember any type of problem with noise. I don't like any hotel in the way that I know person after person has used the bed comforters and blankets and I know those are not cleaned, so I was checking all that out and noticed make up or something on the top sheet right by where my face would be. I thought I'll just get another top sheet from the front desk which I did. The ice machine which was right across my room also did not work, so when I wanted ice I had to go down to the first floor and I swear walk forever before I got to one. I went out to dinner with a friend my first night and when I was back in my hotel room I heard 2 or 3 guys go in the room next to me. I proceeded to hear every single word, crystal clear of their conversation, right down to their breathing. I'm not kidding. It's as if there was no door. So just think of the "other noises" you'd blatantly hear with that room. I was shocked that the walls were literally that thin. I've never experienced that at another hotel. I went down to the front desk and the positive part of this is that the 2 ladies that were working that night were very nice and they suggested in getting me another room. They really worked to get me the right room. I do thank them as they represented customer service very well. I moved all my stuff and yes, it was a very quiet non-adjoining room, so just know there are rooms that are non-adjoining and are much quieter if that's a concern. Unfortunately the deal breaker for me is that the bed was the worst bed I had ever slept in. I don't even have words to describe it other than lumpy, no support, uncomfortable. It seemed to sag down further every hour that was going by. I was sore, neck, shoulders, headache. Awful. It was then and there I decided to check out a day earlier. So I told them then that I would be checking out a day earlier but never told them it was because of the bed, which was no problem as they said I would not be charged for that, and I wasn't so that's good. Mind you, I made my reservation a month prior at $99 a night to which I had my receipt. so when my bill was slid under the door the day before checked out I was charged $109 for the first night and $99 for the second night which didn't make sense. By the way, taxes are ridiculous as well, much much higher than the norm which I'm not sure why those aren't regulated. The bill didn't make sense so when I checked out I asked why am I being charged $10 more for the first night. The guy at the counter, who could have been some sort of manager based on his BS answer told me that this was perfectly normal for the hotel business to raise rates while you're there based on how busy it gets but he'd "go ahead and take care of it". Oh gee, thank you so much for "taking care" of something I should never have been charged for in the first place. I was not happy about it. It's like if you don't say something they try and get whatever extra money they can from you. His answer was the biggest bullsh** answer I have ever heard and I hope he sees this because he's lucky I didn't give him a harder time about it. The bottom line is I will never stay there again. Business is word of mouth and trust me I had many an opportunity while I was in town to share my displeasure with staying at this hotel. I'm honestly not a high-maintenance person but it was one thing after another that made me want to write a very bad review for Somerset Inn. Luckily my company is going to pay for it and not me!!

Room Tip: Ask for non-adjoining room

First let me address the adjoining room situation. When you arrived, our Front Desk Manager attempted to provide you with a complimentary upgrade to our Executive Wing. That’s a good thing. That week, we had a large and prominent corporate group meeting in our hotel. However, the only rooms available with a garden view were the adjoining rooms connected to our suites. Unfortunately, our Front Desk Manager inadvertently upgraded you to the adjoining room that connected to the corporation Executive’s suite. Obviously that was not a good decision and I offer my apology.
Secondly, due to the high volume of business in our hotel that week, the handful of rooms available in the upgraded section of the hotel were only rooms awaiting new mattresses. In hindsight, we should have placed you in one of our nice, but standard, tower rooms which have new pillow-top mattresses. Once again, our effort to provide you with a special upgrade completely backfired.
On the positive side, I was happy to hear that you were pleased with the customer service of our front desk staff as they worked to find an acceptable solution for you.
With regard to the rate, that problem will require some research and the company that handles our property management system is in the process of reviewing the history of your reservation. So, at the time of this writing I don’t have an answer for you. Regardless, at the end of the day, there is no doubt that your experience was less than impressive and for that I extend my sincere apology. Your business and opinion is important to us and I will personally be in contact with you in hopes of offering a acceptable resolution. Thank you. Sincerely, Duane Swanson, General Manager

“Summerset Canadian Shopper Heaven”

So when my wife and kids go shopping over in the states. We always stay at Summerset Inn. It is right across the street from The Summerset Collection. The rooms have always been clean, the staff is great. If you are Canadian they offer a Canadian Deal which includes Full Breakfast and 20% off dinner, Plus discount coupon to the mall and other services in the area.
The Tower room are cheaper than the garden rooms but we have found the beds to more comfortable in the tower. Lots of business travellers during the week.

In the evening they have fresh bake cookies waiting for you. I always tell people if they are coming to the Troy area to give this hotel a chance.

Room Tip: Tower Rooms seem to have better beds and cheaper rates too.
