The Park House Inn is my home away from home when I visit Saugatuck each year. I know that when I walk through the front door, I will be greeted with a warm welcome by the innkeepers, Toni and Melissa. They value their guests and it shows, right from the moment that guests arrive until the moment they leave, no matter how long their stay. I have experienced it myself and have witnessed it with other guests.
When you enter the inn, you immediately notice how clean and warm and inviting the common areas are...perfect for chatting with other guests, grabbing a snack, or just reading a book. The large dining room table is a sure sign that guests will be treated to a wonderful breakfast, and indeed they are. Breakfast menu items often include fresh juice and coffee/tea, a huge bowl filled with fresh fruit salad (strawberries, pineapple, melons, blueberries, kiwi, etc), a selection of yogurts, granola, bacon or sausage, and a special homemade dish such as Apple Pie French Toast or Mexican Frittata or Blueberry Pancakes with a selection of syrups and whipped cream. Toni and Melissa's breakfasts always start my day off right!! The dining area is outfitted with a small ice chest for guests to use, a small fridge to store cold drinks, and snacks are always available for guests to nibble on throughout the day or evening. Sometimes a plate of delicious homemade brownies might even appear for guests to indulge in during the day!
Dining isn't limited to the indoors. A charming screened-in porch off the parlour is my favourite spot to enjoy breakfast or have a cocktail in the afternoon before going out for dinner. Cozy tables and chairs on the porch easily allow you to eat alone, with friends or with other guests. A porch swing also offers a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the sound of the trickling fountain in the backyard.
Back inside, guest rooms are well-appointed with cozy fireplaces or stoves, lots of storage (for when you unpack your bags to "stay a while"), comfy beds, and nice clean bathrooms. Some rooms even offer hot tubs. I always request the room at the top of the stairs...Tamar. Formerly named The Lumberman, Toni and Melissa recently did a fresh makeover of the suite, transforming it from a rustic lodge in to a seaside-like retreat. It really is like a breath of fresh air when you walk in to the room now...exactly the feeling that you want when staying at an inn.
Toni and Melissa are always available at the right time but never in your way. When I arrive after a long drive, they allow me to get settled at my own pace and, throughout my stay, Toni asks if there is anything I need in my room (e.g. extra towels). This is something I have noticed EVERY year that I stay at the Park House...and it's a simple gesture that I appreciate because I know that I am being looked after. During my most recent visit, I identified a small problem with the shower and it was fixed by the time I arrived back at the inn after my afternoon outing. Again...they're available at the right time yet not in your way.
The Saugatuck/Douglas restaurant and shopping scene is dynamic so Toni and Melissa always update me with the latest changes and make solid recommendations of things to see and do. I trust their recommendations because they "test" the restaurants and attractions personally to ensure that their guests get the most out of their stay, not just at their inn, but in Saugatuck/Douglas and the surrounding area (be sure to check out the Dune Rides...it's like a roller coaster on sand!!!).
You will definitely not be disappointed with The Park House Inn. For me, and I'm sure many others, it is a home away from home. The Park House and its guests are very fortunate to have Toni and Melissa looking after them. Already, I can't wait to return next year!
