“Great Escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

Toni and the folks at the Park House B&B provided exactly what we were looking for in a mid-winter escape from Chicago.

The property was immaculate, with all of the charm and quirks you'd expect from a house built in the 1850's. We stayed in the Mignon room, which was your typical B&B room. Nice touch with the gas fireplace. Comfy bed. I kind of wish the room didn't have a TV, but I can already hear the complaints on the other side of the argument.

The breakfasts were delicious, the coffee was superb.

Toni was gracious, welcoming, and full of helpful information. Keep in mind this was the middle of January (MLK weekend), I'd be curious to see what the vibe is like in the mid-summer, I could see the house getting a little crowded.

One drawback is the lack of common space for stretching out to read, converse with guests, etc. Not a big deal, I imagine during the summer everyone is outside all day anyhow. And the screened in porch was closed for the season.

While not right in town, the walk to the restaurants and shops takes a pleasant 10-15 minutes (with 10 inches of snow on the ground).

Price-wise at about $200/night, I'd say this was a bit high, but I think the Saugatuck market dictates the rates and you're probably not going to do much better.

We'd definitely return!

“Delightful hosts, delectable breakfast, and lovely decor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

We stayed only for a brief visit this December at this lovely, historic B&B, and had a marvelous time. The hosts were gracious, unobtrusive, and loaded with helpful information about the area. They permitted us to take a peek at the other vacant rooms, and we took note of the lavish decorations and comfortable surroundings. They call themselves "Sautaguck's oldest", but you'd never know it, as the property has been wonderfully maintained and updated, all while retaining it's historic character. Many rooms have in-room spas, another has a private outdoor hottub, and there is ample parking even when the places is filled!

Room Tip: If you like jacuzzi-tubs, be sure to inquire as to which rooms have them.

“Park HOME”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2011

The Park House Inn is my home away from home when I visit Saugatuck each year. I know that when I walk through the front door, I will be greeted with a warm welcome by the innkeepers, Toni and Melissa. They value their guests and it shows, right from the moment that guests arrive until the moment they leave, no matter how long their stay. I have experienced it myself and have witnessed it with other guests.

When you enter the inn, you immediately notice how clean and warm and inviting the common areas are...perfect for chatting with other guests, grabbing a snack, or just reading a book. The large dining room table is a sure sign that guests will be treated to a wonderful breakfast, and indeed they are. Breakfast menu items often include fresh juice and coffee/tea, a huge bowl filled with fresh fruit salad (strawberries, pineapple, melons, blueberries, kiwi, etc), a selection of yogurts, granola, bacon or sausage, and a special homemade dish such as Apple Pie French Toast or Mexican Frittata or Blueberry Pancakes with a selection of syrups and whipped cream. Toni and Melissa's breakfasts always start my day off right!! The dining area is outfitted with a small ice chest for guests to use, a small fridge to store cold drinks, and snacks are always available for guests to nibble on throughout the day or evening. Sometimes a plate of delicious homemade brownies might even appear for guests to indulge in during the day!

Dining isn't limited to the indoors. A charming screened-in porch off the parlour is my favourite spot to enjoy breakfast or have a cocktail in the afternoon before going out for dinner. Cozy tables and chairs on the porch easily allow you to eat alone, with friends or with other guests. A porch swing also offers a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the sound of the trickling fountain in the backyard.

Back inside, guest rooms are well-appointed with cozy fireplaces or stoves, lots of storage (for when you unpack your bags to "stay a while"), comfy beds, and nice clean bathrooms. Some rooms even offer hot tubs. I always request the room at the top of the stairs...Tamar. Formerly named The Lumberman, Toni and Melissa recently did a fresh makeover of the suite, transforming it from a rustic lodge in to a seaside-like retreat. It really is like a breath of fresh air when you walk in to the room now...exactly the feeling that you want when staying at an inn.

Toni and Melissa are always available at the right time but never in your way. When I arrive after a long drive, they allow me to get settled at my own pace and, throughout my stay, Toni asks if there is anything I need in my room (e.g. extra towels). This is something I have noticed EVERY year that I stay at the Park House...and it's a simple gesture that I appreciate because I know that I am being looked after. During my most recent visit, I identified a small problem with the shower and it was fixed by the time I arrived back at the inn after my afternoon outing. Again...they're available at the right time yet not in your way.

The Saugatuck/Douglas restaurant and shopping scene is dynamic so Toni and Melissa always update me with the latest changes and make solid recommendations of things to see and do. I trust their recommendations because they "test" the restaurants and attractions personally to ensure that their guests get the most out of their stay, not just at their inn, but in Saugatuck/Douglas and the surrounding area (be sure to check out the Dune Rides...it's like a roller coaster on sand!!!).

You will definitely not be disappointed with The Park House Inn. For me, and I'm sure many others, it is a home away from home. The Park House and its guests are very fortunate to have Toni and Melissa looking after them. Already, I can't wait to return next year!

“The best spot in Saugatuck”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

I have been staying at The Parkhouse Inn for 12 years over Labour Day weekend with a group of friends from Canada. We love spending our Labour Day weekend with Toni and Mellissa. They are the most gracious hosts and treat all of us like family. The house has lots of history and very cosy. I have stayed in every room in the house for guests over the 12 years. We book our reservations each Labour Day for the next one and Toni contacts us all in May to confirm our reservations. I highly recommend staying at The Parkhouse Inn to all my friends and the other friends that we stay with each year do the same.
Toni and Mellissa, if you read this site, thanks so much for your hospitality and making us feel like family.

“A Perfect Gem - Like Staying with Dear Friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

Several friends and I stayed at the Park House just after the 4th of July holiday, based on the recommendation of other friends who own one of the nicest and most highly rated B&Bs in Vermont. They told us in advance that in Saugatuck, and even Michigan as a whole, "The Park House is one of the loveliest, cleanest, and most comfortable, and the hosts do everything right." With a recommendation like that, we didn't question. And they were absolutely right!

When we arrived, we found our hostess, Toni, to be extremely friendly and informative, showed us around the main floor of the house and garden before showing us to our rooms, and even already had a few suggestions for us regarding things to do and recent local restaurant feedback she had received from past guests (she had remembered our mentioning certain things we liked to do and the types of food we like based on the short conversation we had months before when we made our reservations - awesome!). Our three rooms were all clean, comfortable, and perfectly appointed, without being at all cluttered. Even though a couple of us were all the way up on the top floor, extra towels were cheerfully and immediately brought up when we asked.

You know a B&B is done right when the breakfast guests are so comfortable chatting for HOURS with the other guests and hosts that you completely lose track of time. Some in our party had missed a pottery class in a nearby village they had reserved because they were having such a great time yapping! The food was varied and delicious - rather than serving one item each morning ("take it or leave it") as do many other B&Bs, and for which the entire house has to make a mad dash to the breakfast table at, say, 9am sharp, the hosts of the Park House prepared several hot and cold breakfast items which are kept warm (the hot ones, not the cold!) for when you're good and ready to head to the dining area to eat. Each morning while we ate, one of the hosts, Melissa, nevertheless inquired whether everything was good and if we wanted any more. YAY - just like at Mom's! :)

Without going on and on, I just want to summarize by saying this place is GREAT! We felt like we were visiting friends, rather than just staying in a B&B. I highly recommend the Park House!
