We really enjoyed our stay at National House Inn. We gave my parents a gift certificate here as a Christmas gift since it's situated halfway between where we and they live, and we finally made use of it in October.
The inn is a beautiful old building with a lot of history behind it. The lobby is very rustic and charming, and the rooms are tastefully decorated in what looks like late 1800's or early 1900's style. I'm not an expert but a lot of what the inn is decorated with look like antiques. We stayed in the Charles Dickey room which had a fireplace and a good sized bathroom. My parents were in the Isaac Crary room which was also nice and overlooked the fountain, which is a focal point in the town. Both rooms were quiet and the beds were very comfortable.
Our rooms were very clean and we had no problems with noise as some others here have said. Some entries in the guestbook in our room said the hotel was haunted, but we didn't experience anything. There was free wifi throughout, but I got better reception in the lobby than in our room.
Breakfast was very good with homemade quiche (or was it fritatta), boiled eggs, coffee cake, fresh fruit, a waffle station, cinnamon-raisin toast, english muffins and a few other items. There was also coffee, tea, juice and water. The food and drinks are buffet style, and the staff came around to refill coffee on occasion. Overall, a very nice set up and it was a good start to our days there. Later in the day there were cookies and little snacks with coffee and tea that you could help yourself to if you wanted.
The location is also very good. As I said, it's right next to the town's big fountain. A block or so further is where the shops, restaurants and bars are situated and easily walkable. One of the first restaurants you come to is Schuler's, which is over 100 years old and has great food. There are a few more casual restaurants in town, and two or three bars. There are several antique shops, a toys store, a movie theater, and some other shops, plus a few banks in town. If you feel like driving you can turn left rather than right out of the hotel and there are restaurants like Applebee's and fast food plus the typical stores you would see in a city. A little further is a place called Cornwell's Turkeyville, a turkey farm where they have great turkey dinners and dinner theatre plus other seasonal activities.
Overall we have no complaints about the National House Inn, and it's a cute little town to visit. We enjoyed everything about our stay and the friendly staff.
