“Amazing B&B in a wonderful small town!”

It's pretty incredible that much of my life was spent within about an hour of this inn and I'd never set foot in it. Now that I live 2,000 miles away, I finally spent the night here! This place is just incredible with its large display of antiques! I felt like we were staying in our own private museum! We stayed in the Ketchum suite which is larger than some of the rooms with its separate sitting area and 1 and 1/2 baths.

Although the room was older and filled with antiques, the bathrooms were very functional although a bit on the small size. Our room faced the Brooks Fountain in the middle of town, but the room was still pretty quiet. We had no problems with noise although I think part of the charm of the inn is the squeaky floorboards in the ceiling (not too noisy, though.)

Breakfast was nice with a variety of items including quiche, waffles, fresh fruit, homemade bread and cinnamon raisin bread. Barb, the owner or innkeeper, was a very gracious and friendly hostess.

I look forward to staying here again on our next visit to Michigan!!

Room Tip: The Ketchum Suite seemed to be one of the larger rooms with its separate sitting area.

“Wished we could have stayed longer at this inn”

This historic inn was very comfortable, pleasant and clean. We arrived on Monday evening when the inn was quiet. We enjoyed looking at each available room and the innkeepers missed no details. The rooms were amazingly beautiful all in their own way. Breakfast was very generous in a self serve display. We were sorry to have to leave the next day but we were on a road trip exploring colleges in the Ohio and Michigan areas. Will definitely return asap to spend more time at this inn and the cute town of Marshall.

Room Tip: The inn runs a special for Sunday and Monday

“Beautiful Old Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2010

We really enjoyed our stay at National House Inn. We gave my parents a gift certificate here as a Christmas gift since it's situated halfway between where we and they live, and we finally made use of it in October.

The inn is a beautiful old building with a lot of history behind it. The lobby is very rustic and charming, and the rooms are tastefully decorated in what looks like late 1800's or early 1900's style. I'm not an expert but a lot of what the inn is decorated with look like antiques. We stayed in the Charles Dickey room which had a fireplace and a good sized bathroom. My parents were in the Isaac Crary room which was also nice and overlooked the fountain, which is a focal point in the town. Both rooms were quiet and the beds were very comfortable.

Our rooms were very clean and we had no problems with noise as some others here have said. Some entries in the guestbook in our room said the hotel was haunted, but we didn't experience anything. There was free wifi throughout, but I got better reception in the lobby than in our room.

Breakfast was very good with homemade quiche (or was it fritatta), boiled eggs, coffee cake, fresh fruit, a waffle station, cinnamon-raisin toast, english muffins and a few other items. There was also coffee, tea, juice and water. The food and drinks are buffet style, and the staff came around to refill coffee on occasion. Overall, a very nice set up and it was a good start to our days there. Later in the day there were cookies and little snacks with coffee and tea that you could help yourself to if you wanted.

The location is also very good. As I said, it's right next to the town's big fountain. A block or so further is where the shops, restaurants and bars are situated and easily walkable. One of the first restaurants you come to is Schuler's, which is over 100 years old and has great food. There are a few more casual restaurants in town, and two or three bars. There are several antique shops, a toys store, a movie theater, and some other shops, plus a few banks in town. If you feel like driving you can turn left rather than right out of the hotel and there are restaurants like Applebee's and fast food plus the typical stores you would see in a city. A little further is a place called Cornwell's Turkeyville, a turkey farm where they have great turkey dinners and dinner theatre plus other seasonal activities.

Overall we have no complaints about the National House Inn, and it's a cute little town to visit. We enjoyed everything about our stay and the friendly staff.

“Not as great as it looks”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2010

I made a reservation over the phone the day before my arrival and the owner said I could check-in around 2:00 pm. When I arrived she said the room wasn't ready and I needed to come back in an hour. I then came back and she told me that I was one of 5 people in a 20 something room b&b. Why they didn't have a room ready for me was odd.
I also asked for breakfast at 7 am and they were very confused by that. They then left a very small dish of cut fruit out on the counter overnight for me with a micro bottle of water.
The bathroom was very outdated.
The key they gave me for the locked front door didn't work so other guests had to let me in.
When I checked in, they were training one of their employees and she followed me and the other employee around and it was really awkward.

The furnishings in the bedroom were nice and clean. The house and common rooms were very beautiful.

“A real treat in a lovely town”

I truly enjoyed my stay here. My room (George S. Wright) was bright and clean, and the staff's hospitality every morning was excellent. Coffee, tea and snacks were ever-present, privacy was respected, and the historic setting was a treat. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
