We stayed at this little spot right across the highway from Lake Superior. It's set far enough back, nestled against the woods, that the highway is not too close. It is not for the urbane; it is basic but clean; it is great for those with dogs. Our particular main floor room was large, with big screened windows facing in two directions. We had a great sleep.

There is a complimentary breakfast, and the people who stay here seem to be repeat customers; they picnic outside and barbecue. We enjoyed the scenery and breeze from the lake. Traffic noise in the morning commute will get you up early. Great dog-walking areas.

Our room had a small kitchenette, and the room and bath in our room seemed to be quite handicapped-accessible. The Birchmont was much nicer and cleaner than the cottage we had rented!

We made another reservation on our return trip in August and enjoyed our second stay even more. Beautiful sunrises!

I booked the Birchmont based on the great views I heard they had, but that's about all they have. I wasn't expecting anything fancy for $45, but what I got was a room on the ground floor hidden under a set of stairs. The security light above the door was on a timer that seemed to have nothing to do with whether or not it was dark outside because when it was actually dark, it went out. The next to mine, which was on the corner facing the back of the motel had the door barricaded shut and the door knob removed--again, not making me feel very secure at the motel. The room itself was clean and furnished with outdated furnishings--not really a big deal. The tv kept randomly turning itself off in the very limited time I actually watched it. The best part about the Birchmont, other than the view, was the continental breakfast. I was able to eat lunch for 2 days off the fruit, granola bars, etc...

This is an older but well-maintained two-story motel situated across the highway from Lake Superior. It has a gorgeous view. Our room was on the second floor (no elevator) and had a small balcony facing the lake. The back of the motel is a wooded hillside which gives a nice sense of privacy. We did not sample the continental breakfast. You have to drive into town for restaurants etc. but this takes only a few minutes. Go to the Landmark Inn for great food and ambience. There is a lounge on the top floor with a terrific view and a friendly pub and more formal restaurant on the first floor. As for the Birchmont, we will stay here again when we spend an overnight in Marquette.

This is a basic (meaning not at all fancy) place, but very clean and pleasant. The rooms are plenty big enough, and well furnished with everything you need. For the price, this is really a remarkable value. This was my first visit, based on the recommendation in the AAA book, but I will definitely stay here again whenever I'm in the area. The manager was very friendly and efficient, and the view of Lake Superior is unbeatable.
It's a few miles outside town, so you can't walk to anything, and you need to walk up a short flight of stairs, but that's not really a drawback to me. The fact that it's so well maintained means much more.
