My husband and I wanted to ride our bikes on the Allegheny Gap Trail, and we booked a room at Hotel Gunter. BTW, to get from the trail to the hotel, you need to climb a zigzag connector trail to the Gap Trail parking area and then you have to climb up a HUGE hill to the hotel, although there is a shuttle that operates some of the time.
The hotel was built at the end of the 19th century, but renovated in 1986. Some aspects of the hotel were great, like the unbelievable curved staircase you see when entering the hotel. The entrance from the rear parking lot smelled musty and mildewy. In general, the hotel was very tatty.
We had a room with two double beds. I'll bet it has not been renovated since 1986. The entire room sloped toward the door, so that I felt like I would slide out of bed! There was a refrigerator in a passage area between the room and the bathroom and to get to the bathroom, we had to squeeze between the fridge and the bathroom entrance. There was an extension cord going from the refrigerator into the bathroom, where it was plugged in above the sink! Unfortunately, someone had turned off the power strip that the fridge was plugged into so when I opened the fridge, the smell nearly knocked me over. The room was not very clean, and I found debris from some other guests beneath the bed.
There was a porch, of sorts, overlooking the street that ran in front of the hotel and we sat there and ate a sandwich I had packed. It was so noisy, as the hotel overlooks the main street.
The person who greeted us, Mary Louise, was very very nice, though. But even her cheerful nature could not make up for the condition of the room.
