“Like sleeping on asphalt”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2011

Wow, we got rid of our futon 20 years ago. Funny it sure felt like the Inn at Southwest claimed it and was using it in the Pumpkin Room where we recently stayed. We checked to make sure and confirmed that yes it was a mattress. A really really firm one. If you like sleeping on asphalt then the Pumpkin Room is for you.

We were thirsty at night and went looking for water. Only a Keurig machine with hot tea and coffee. No water except what you get from your bathroom sink. Had to ask for the wifi password the next morning after finding out in the room binder they had wireless. Would have been nice to have been told that at check in and offered the password.

It's a cute inn. Beautiful porch especially at sunset. Would have loved to curl up with a book if we had a chance and some quiet. One late afternoon we returned from a hike to find the innkeepers themselves sitting at the corner table relaxing with wine and talking with guests.

It would have been nice if we weren't asked to fork over our credit card right away after being greeted. I realize it's a short tourism season and they have to make their money but having already paid for 2 nights of a 3 night stay six months before our arrival, it seemed a little cold. Every other B & B we've stayed at on trips to Southwest Harbor we would pay when checking out. And despite a hurricane warning, they made clear that we were responsible for all three nights. We ended up having to check out early Saturday night anyway to beat Irene and never got to eat that breakfast we paid for. Surprise, no offer to refund at least the cost of the breakfast although they did tell us "Come back and stay with us again!" Not.

Room Tip: Avoid the Pumpkin Room

I am truly sorry your stay with us was less than enjoyable. We try very hard to make our guests feel at home.

I recall filling your water bottles a number of times during your stay from the filtered water we keep for guests in the kitchen, so there was an alternative to tap water available which you availed yourselves of. I try to stay current with what amenities my competition offers to stay competitive, and bottled watergenerally isn't one of them, nor do addvertise that it is.

I am a small business and I have only 7 guestrooms, and I cannot control the weather. This isn't a hobby for me, it is how I earn a living. I hold the specific room once reserved and will refund for cancellations made at least 2 weeks prior to scheduled arrival. My deposit requirements and cancellation/early departure policies are consistent with the majority of Inns in this area and are clearly outlined on my website. I collect the balance, as indicated on the confirmation I send to all guests, upon arrival largely to avoid having to do it during our busy breakfast time. I believe my policies to be fair to both my guests and to me as a business owner and I am sorry you found that offensive or cold.

This is a "Bed and Breakfast", you were not charged for breakfast, it is complimentary with the price of the room. If we know in advance that a guest has to depart before breakfast we offer to prepare a to go bag with a homemade muffin and fruit and we also provide lidded cups for coffee. I wasn't present when you decided to leave early, but I believe you told us of your decision just before handing in your key and departing.

Again, I am truly sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us. With uncertainties surrounding hurricane Irene and the threat of dangerous weather both here and at guests respective homes, it was a difficult and challenging weekend for all of us, guests and innkeepers alike. We endeaver to do our best while realizing it is impossible to please everyone. We hope that if you are in this area again you would give us a second chance to make your stay an enjoyable one.

“Invaluable help from innkeeper”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

We stayed for 2 nights during the heatwave of mid July (temperatures reached 95) and the humidity shorted out the electrical system of our rental car when sightseeing just outside of the car - with the keys on the drivers seat. This meant the car was locked good and as tourists with the breakdown assistance information locked inside we were pretty stuck. And it was the weekend. A phone call to Sandy back at the inn was the only option we had before breaking a window. She promptly called on her AAA membership, then drove out to wait with us until the mechanic turned up and did his thing to safely force open a door. All told she took 2+ hours out of her day and was a real lifesaver. The inn was good too! It's true that staying on the third floor without AC didn't make for a great night's sleep but the inn is lovely, the breakfast's stellar and the two innkeepers are pure gold.

“Jewel location and Innkeeper.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

My wife and I made a late decision to visit MDI and we didn't want the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor, so like everyone I hit the Internet to see if anything was available. The Inn at Southwest only had openings for 3 nights mid-week, so we took what was available. We wish we could have strapped a month. Sandy and Ester made us feel at home from the minute we walked in the door. Our room and the Inn was clean, and well appointed with many antiques from the Far East. T breakfasts were eual to any 5star resort and my wife is still raving about the blueberry pancakes that were "the best she ever ate"...and we are from Maine, so that is saying quite a lot. Ester and Sandy were extremely friendly and couldn't do enough to help us with local advice to making dinner reservations. We can't wait to go back next year.

“Comfortable and Convenient”

A very relaxed atmosphere. When we travel, we try to stay at B&B's. The Inn at Southwest Harbor hit the mark. It felt like home away from home but with a better breakfast! The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Sandy and Esther were very helpful and suggested great places to eat and visit, yet were not intrusive into our privacy. Centrally located, it was a great spot to tour Acadia from.

“Lovely Inn, great collections”

The owners have done a wonderful job of assembling very classy art, objects, furniture, without the fussy, faux victorian look of many B & B's. Rooms are nice, breakfast is superb! Located short walk from great dining.
