“Moorings is great!”

My wife and I stayed at the Moorings in New Harbor, Maine for one week (the minimum stay) in July.  It defies the logic of most similar accomodations and is in a category of its own.  These are condominium-like apartments, beautiful and comfortable. We were amazed at the beauty and attention to detail at the Moorings.  We stayed in the "Brackett" apartment which was in immaculate condition with the windows sparkling.  The private deck was huge and the views were amazing!  The kitchen is fully equipped and after coffee every morning we would walk down a sculptured winding stone staircase through the most pleasant landscape with an abundance of flowering shrubs and flowers.  We arrived at the pool for our morning swim, enjoyed the hot tub and occasionally played some tennis.  7 apartments in restored classic New England homes make up this destination which sits on 10 acres.  In short, the Moorings for us is the opposite of other establishments in Maine.  This place has the feeling of an elaborate upscale compound or private estate and is less expensive than first class hotel accomodations.  We fell in love with the Moorings and fell in love with each other all over again.  Thank you, Sally, the owner-manager.  We appreciated your integrity, taste and love for what you have created.  Strict adherence to occupancy numbers avoids any overcrowding.  Our only fear is that the Moorings changes.  We left wanting more.

“This is definitely NOT a hotel”

If you’ve ever stayed at a hotel, the words “sprawling 10-acre estate” were probably not used to describe where you stayed. On my vacations, I usually stay at hotels but last summer I decided to stay somewhere different. I chose the Moorings in New Harbor, Maine, and it was truly unique. At hotels, one has to hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the outside doorknob if your habits include putting your jewelry on the nightstand or your unmentionables in plain sight and you want absolute privacy until you straighten up. Not here. Absolute privacy, peace, and tranquility are guaranteed at these amazing rental apartments. At the Moorings, I remember falling asleep at night and waking up in the morning to silence, perhaps a bird twittering nearby or the distant sound of a bell buoy alerting incoming boats that floated in on the dark sea.
At hotels, I remember falling asleep and waking up to other guests having amplified conversations on cell phones right outside my door and sometimes, vacuuming that apparently had to be done at 7am. Sure, I chose to stay at these destinations but I promised myself that I would not go to another hotel as long as the Moorings exists. The funny thing is that the Moorings is listed under “hotels” if the internet is your preferred way of booking. I said it before and I’ll say it again: The Moorings is not a hotel. It isn’t possible to stay there for one or two nights and there’s a reason for that.
The place is too beautiful and serene to make it a one or two night affair. You have to stay at least two weeks to discover how wonderful it can be to hear trees swaying at night instead of car alarms. The Moorings is in a category of its’ own, but it should at least be placed under “rental apartments” and even that doesn’t begin to describe the lush environment and clean air that cannot be replicated. Excuse me, but I have to call and reserve my month rental now before anyone reads this!

“Amazing destination!”

Keep this under your hat but the best kept secret in all of Maine is a vacation destination; it's called THE MOORINGS in the mid-coast town of Bristol overlooking a little fishing village; New Harbor. It afforded us "weary travelers" in desperate need of rest and relaxation magnificent accomodations against a backdrop of the most beautiful landscape Maine has to offer. This entire 10-acre site is tastefully and painstakingly developed and dedicated to just 7 apartments. For the fortunate few who stay there it is this kind of vacation that is virtually impossible at most destinations. Beautiful ocean and harbor views resplendently augmented by boundless space.

It has the most beautiful indoor pool we have seen with a huge sundeck with southern exposure. As if this was not enough, it has a sound system that supplies soothing music while bathing. A few steps away, there's a separate glass building with a hot tub and shower which overlooks a tennis court, all with a view of the harbor.

The Moorings has all of the romance one can absorb. It has terraced gardens and landscaping gently lit in the evening. Simply to experience the plantings is an adventure.

At the summit of this development is "lookout hill" the highest topographical location in New Harbor with commanding views of this charming lobstering harbor. On this hill there is an old garage converted to an office and community building with motorized exercise bikes, a computer for internet access, community telephones, and answering service for all guests of The Moorings. Oh, lest I forget there's a free washer-dryer laundry room and complementary towels at the pool? This was the best vacation value never mind experience of a lifetime.

Kudos to the owners of this place. If they ever decide to convert to condos or co-op ownership we will be the first in line. Our only wish is that it never changes. I should not praise this place so lavishly. If people read about this they might tell their friends and the next thing you know, there'll be a traffic line along South Side Road encouraging its growth. Forget I mentioned it.

place to become so popular as to become overrun with people and become just another tourist spot so please stay away!
