The Inn has the fantastic dinners that everyone has described. Since we were in the Captain's Quarters, we had a nice size room with a private bath with a large shower and lots of hot water. The bed was fine with hand made quilt done by Diana's mother on top. Breakfast was not great compared to dinner, but the hostess, Diana, knocked herself out to be welcoming and to do whatever she could to make us comfortable. We had pink lemonade in the afternoon and good before dinner appetizers to share with the other dinner guests starting at 6. Evenings were very pleasant.
We were unlucky enough to have rain for the whole visit and it was hard to use the bikes to get around and harder to make it to the trail heads as we had planned to do. The bikes are as she described, with the added part that the brakes, foot brakes though they are, really did not work well. We mostly walked them up hill and coasted cautiously downhill, never wanting to go too fast as we could not have stopped. We had no trouble zooming around other spots on the same trip when we had bikes that worked. If you are driving to Stonington, bring your own bikes if possible.
The chocolatier down the road is delicious and was a welcome spot to stop in the rain. We also ate our picnic lunch [which was very good] in the back of the church, the only dry spot open in town. The heavy moss and ferns suggest it rains a lot on this island!
Apparently Diana has lobster bakes out on the dock in good weather and it would surely be a MUCH better visit in the sun. Trails sounded terrific and other guests had enjoyed them in better days before we arrived.
