My friend and I stayed in Belfast in July 2010, several days midweek. This has to be one of the friendliest towns that Maine has to offer; we were greeted warmly and often wherever we shopped or dined and Belfast is wonderful for walking. In fact, we left our car at our lodging for most of our stay. Most (if not all) of the storefronts in the downtown area were occupied with interesting shops offering a wide variety of goods which was not your typical tourist stuff. Prices varied from low for trinkets to take home to high for excellent quality clothing, art and juried crafted items. In fact, it took some searching to locate a tee shirt shop. It is an easy town to navigate and the free maps are easy to follow; there are very clean public restrooms near the center of town, something New England frequently does not offer. We enjoyed lunch at Darby's, good food, friendly service, pleasant atmosphere. One evening we dined on excellent pizza, ice cold beer and played a few very friendly games of pool at Rollie's (which, by the way, has a fabulous music selection on the jukebox). Supper another night at the Weathervane offered delicious lobster with good quality consistent to this chain's other locations. The community parks in Belfast are little gems; beautifully maintained and well designed. Belfast's sidewalk art involves fish sculptures which have bicycle parts built into them; very fun to view and test out with a "ride to nowhere". I neglected to note the artists' names and apologize; the work is just wonderful and is much more imaginative than the cows, horses and pig art offered in other N.E. tourist destinations. Belfast makes a great spot to enjoy other Maine towns. We took a short drive to Rockland to enjoy the Farnsworth Museum and Boothbay to view the Maine Coastal Botanical Gardens. Both places are treasures, not expensive and can be enjoyed in less than a day leaving plenty of time for relaxation or shopping. This beautiful, small Maine community is a perfect vacation spot; it's still the "real" Maine that I grew up in and has not yet become overcrowded. Our last evening in Belfast, we walked back to our inn quite late at night and felt perfectly safe on the quiet, well lit streets. If you've not yet been there, we heartily recommend it as a destination vacation.
