“An A+ B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2007

What fantastic B&B! My husband and I travel 5-6 times per year, perferring to stay in B&Bs ... and the Londonderry Inn is now on our list of favorites. The public areas are furnished with lots of comfortable seating, tons of reading material (books, magazines, local publications, brochures, etc); there is seating on a small porch outside (if the weather is warm enough); and the dining room table is located in a kitchen/den great area. The bedrooms are wonderful with huge bathrooms, luxury linens and towels, and instant hot water (a big plus with me). And the family that lives at the Inn is nothing short of amazing!! We were instantly made to feel like a welcomed member of the "extended" family. [I can't imagine what the lady from the Feb 07 feedback (listed below this one) was thinking. I guess some people are just NEVER happy] The inn does have 2 cats (one very friendly, one totally aloof (anyone who owns cats understands), so if you're not a cat person, you may find this offputting ... but my husband and I are definite Cat People, so this was one more touch that made the Londonderry Inn feel like staying at a close friend's home. Breakfast was fantastic -- good coffee, french toast, chicken/apple sausage (yeah - a B&B that serves protein!!!) and locally made jam. And then there is the little town of Belfast -- in addition to the small main street of shops, be sure to drive around and look at the beautiful homes. This was our favorite town in Maine -- just beautiful! Both the Londonderry Inn and Belfast are highly recommended.

  • Liked — the friendliness of the innkeeper and her family (mom, dad and grandma)
  • Disliked — locate one mile outside of town - but we had a car, so it was no big problem

“Friendly--but a bit much for us”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2007

There are B&B's where the innkeeper's touch is effective, but light--you see the effects of the work and care, but the people remain largely behind-the-scenes and the overall picture is a polished one. There are others in which you feel like you're not so much a guest at an inn, but a visitor to someone else's home (and participant--sometimes involuntarily--in the rituals and habits of the family who live there). The Londonderry Inn is the second kind.

The room was fairly spacious, the attached private bathroom was huge and well stocked with nice toiletries and cushy towels, and the breakfast was tasty and filling.

We felt a bit claustrophobic, however. The Inn is not right in Belfast proper, but sitting amid farmland along a busy thoroughfare leading into town. We would have preferred a location that allowed more access to the cute downtown, or at the very least one that was less prone to road noise. (Our mistake, not the Inn's, but don't book this property if you're hoping to have walking access to Belfast...or to anywhere.)

A night at this inn felt like a stay with eccentric relatives. The Inn itself is large, but felt somewhat mazelike and closed-in on itself. The weather was muggy (it was the end of July, and rainy), and while the room's window a/c blocked out some of the highway noise, it was itself too loud to sleep to. Furnishings were kitschy and a bit much...that sort of describes our overall experience.

Breakfast was served AT a specific time (other B&B's we've stayed at had a set range, and you come when you're ready) at a communal table in the kitchen alongside the family, and it came one course at a time. The family cats roamed the house, and someone came by to knock half an hour BEFORE check-out time to make sure we were leaving (apparently people occasionally lumber upstairs after breakfast and fall back asleep?)

I realize now that I value privacy and flexibility along with hospitality--in short, I prefer the first kind of B&B, where it seems like the house is perhaps kept by elves. This stay was not a bad experience--in fact, I would recommend it heartily to someone who has awhile to unwind and likes to feel like they've joined someone else's family for that time. It just wasn't what we were looking for.

  • Liked — well-appointed private bath
  • Disliked — not quite enough personal space, even considering it's a B&B

Wonderful B&B with great innkeepers; very clean and beautiful. Breakfast was 5*. One negative would be road noise in Room 2 closest to busy highway Inn fronts on. Other positives far outweigh this.

  • Liked — breakfast
  • Disliked — highway noise
  • Tips/Secrets — ask for room away from highway

“The best of Belfast!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2004

This place was amazing! My wife and I stayed at the Londonderry Inn for two nights in April 2004, and we can easily say it was the best bed and breakfast we have ever been to. The Inn was beautifully and tastefully decorated (not "over-decorated" like so many B&Bs), and our rooms were large and very comfortable. Each morning we were served an incredible, multi-course, country-style breakfast. While you stay here, expect to eat a late lunch because this breakfast will keep you going for most of the day! After returning to the Inn from a day of adventuring in the Belfast area, we were even welcomed back by a plate of freshly-baked cookies! At night, my wife and I relaxed by watching a movie from the Inn's huge video library.

The Inn is a family-run business, and we really felt like a part of the family during our stay. The innkeepers are very personable and fun to talk to, and they made an extra effort to make everything exactly the way we wanted it. The Londonderry really has something for everybody, and we will definitely stay there again when we return to the Belfast area.
