“Unbeatable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2011

We planned a trip to Iowa City over the 4th of July to visit our son who now works there. I had not thought of a B&B, but was not happy with the hotel choices and locations. I happened upon the Mission House and made reservations. It was the easiest reservation I ever made. I have stayed at a number of excellent B&B's over the years in various locations, so Ray and Shirley had a high standard to meet. When we arrived later in the afternoon, we were warmly greeted and shown to our spacious and spotless room. I loved having the small refrigerator in the room (and though it was mentioned on the website, it was an added bonus). We had a lot of room to spread out if we wanted to be in the room. I actually enjoyed a bit of downtime there. It was quiet and peaceful. The secured internet was fast enough and I didn't have to worry about others hacking into my computer.
Ray and Shirley are really the best. They make you feel like family and are there when you need them but leave you alone when you want quiet. It is the perfect balance.
Breakfast was outstanding. After eating too much, we would go for a long walk through the scenice neighborhoods or across the river.
Our son came to visit and meet the owners, and they also treated him like family.
The location of the home was so convenient to where our son works and lives. If we had needed to walk to downtown, we could have easily done that, too.
I am thankful that I chose this place as it added another dimension to our vacation and certainly made it beyon enjoyable!
Oh and it's funny that another review mentioned the hair dryers, but it sure was nice to have a real one rather than a typical hotel model that takes forever to use.

“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

Where to start... Shirley and Ray are the most gracious of hosts, warm, welcoming and very engaging. They are truly the ultimate hosts. The B & B is truly a home, and is very beautiful. The room was very spacious and inviting. The Mission House is only eight blocks from downtown Iowa City and is well worth the walk. The Brown Street neighborhood has some very nice homes and the walk is tree covered along a cobblestone street.
The food.. I can say that the food is some of the best I have ever had, (sorry Mom). The pumpkin pancakes and homemade granola and even homemade syrup were the best the dishes, The food was either vegetable or fruit oriented and very delicious. The Swiss Chard Frittata and Potato, Leek, and Feta Tart were two of my favorites, the pumpkin pancakes being my favorite (and they truly bear a second mention).

I would definately recommoned staying here, just for the food alone if not the great company and hospitality as well.

“A home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

I just loved my stay with Shirley and Ray at their Mission House B&B. Their brand of hospitality is warm and their primary interest is making sure the guests are comfortable and well fed. Probably the best gauge of their B&B is how many people return year after year. They have an impressive list of returnees and I will be among them if I have the good fortune to return to Iowa City next year.

My wife and I just spent the weekend in Iowa City for the summer arts fest and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Shirley and Ray are wonderful people, the house is immaculate, the location is close to everything, quiet neighborhood, and the breakfasts were awesome. Baked pears with vanilla yogurt and homemade granola, pumpkin pancakes, fruit omelettes and blueberry muffins. We will definitely be returning next time we stay in Iowa City.

“Stay at a comfortable home away from your own home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011

My stay at the Mission House in Iowa City one of the best experiences I've had traveling (and I have traveled a lot). The house is extremely well maintained, the bedrooms are tastefully decorated, the breakfasts are yummy, and the hospitality and professionalism of the owners is unbeatable. Each of the rooms has a private bath, great hair dryer, etc. The best part was the bed - firm and comfortable at the same time. Location was also excellent.
