“Great Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

We were traveling to Bettendorf to visit family for Thanksgiving, and we secured two rooms using our Marriott rewards points the night of 11/24/11. We were there only one night, but I was very impressed with my short stay. They are in the process of completely renovating the hotel, and the first floor was under construction. However, in walking through the mess to get to my room, I was struck by the extent of the renovation. This isn't just a "gloss over" update. The halls had new drywall, they had torn out the carpet, and it appeared the ceilings and lighting were getting a major overhaul, as that was all new too. When I got to my room, everything was fresh and new. Not only were the walls & bathroom pristine, there was new furniture, bedding, carpeting, everything. It was really nice!! It was like staying in a brand new hotel.
In addition to the nice new room, the woman who checked us in when we arrived was very friendly and engaging. She was concerned about us walking through the hallways with all the construction activity going on, but that was not an issue at all for us. Even though she was working on the holiday, she was very cheerful. It was a great start to the holiday for us!
We didn't have breakfast the next morning, but they don't have a free breakfast like many other hotels. The cost was a little on the steep side for me, so we opted to visit another restaurant in town. There are several restaurants down the road from the hotel, so that also wasn't an issue for us.
The only negative for us was that since we didn't use the in-room heater/air conditioner (the weather was really nice for November!), we could hear the traffic on the interstate behind the hotel. The hotel is very close to I-74, and our room faced that direction. We will definitely come back to this hotel in the future, but we will request a room that doesn't back to the interstate - perhaps an inner courtyard room.
Overall, I was very pleased with our stay. Since we have family in the area, we anticipate being regular customers in the future.

Room Tip: I would suggest you get an inner courtyard room to cut down on noise.

“Renovations underway...looking forward to end result!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

I stayed here for two nights on a leisure trip in November 2011 after a previous stay at this property in 2009. The hotel is midway through a major renovation due to wrap up by mid-December 2011. It is my understanding that the new rooms (which look lovely and are in line with more recently-built Courtyards) are now being given to guests as the next phase of the renovation begins and that my stay was one of the last in the old rooms, which clearly did need improvement. I took a peek into one of the rooms being renovated and it does appear to be a COMPLETE renovation down to the drywall, not just a quick spruce-up of selected elements of the room.

Staff was courteous and apologetic at every turn for the few inconveniences caused by the renovation process, even providing a weekly update with photos and a timeline of progress. I received an e-mail from the manager of the hotel several weeks before my arrival, explaining that they were renovating and giving me ample time, had I wanted to, to cancel my reservation and stay elsewhere. This was greatly appreciated.

Other reviewers note the difficulty in initially finding the property. If you're used to physically searching for a Marriott property (regardless of brand), its "visible from the freeway but a pain to find and get to" location will not surprise you in the least.

I will continue to select this hotel for future stays in the Quad Cities area and look forward to experiencing one of the renovated rooms during my next visit.

“Old and a bit under the weather”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

I've stayed here three times in the last 18 months (Marriott Points) and I'm bummed each time. While the location is good for me, it's close to "home", it's a Courtyard that needs a lot of attention...the staff is great, but the rooms the furniture the lobby, they're all clean enough, but outdated.

From a security perspective, they need to insure that all their outside doors that say(!) they lock, requiring a key to enter, do. That's not the case.

It's an okay place to stay, but, please do not expect this to be like other Courtyard Hotels.

Room Tip: Do NOT get a room on the Interstate 74 side of the hotel.

“Not up to Courtyard standards”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

We stayed for two nights while in town for my high school reunion. As others have mentioned, even with GPS, this is a bit difficult to find. Once we drove past our turn several times and finally located the property, check in was efficient and friendly. Our room seemed a bit warm upon arrival, so we turned the A/C up before heading out to dinner. The front desk staff provided some good dinner recommendations which were nearby.
When we returned to the room, it was still stuffy and a bit warm in the room. The bathroom also smelled of urine although everything looked clean. Since it was late, we waited until morning to notify the front desk of these problems.
The next morning we notified the desk of both of these issues. We had breakfast at the restaurant. For the buffet with eggs cooked to order, it was $10 pp. There was fresh fruit, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and some packaged pastries. It wasn't particularly good and we didn't eat here the second morning. I am sure there are better breakfast options in the area.
When we returned to our room late that evening, it was still overly warm in the room and the smell was still in the bathroom. When I approached the front desk the next morning as we were checking out, they apologized for the inconvenience, but offered no explanation or compensation. The desk clerk pointed out that we were staying on Marriott points.I had the feeling that they knew about the problems in the room and had given us the room with that room because we were using free nights.
Overall, if we return to the area, I would opt for the Fairfield in a few blocks away. It is a newer property with free breakfast.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms next to the elevator or exits

“Decent, but don't drink the water”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

As mentioned in a previous review, this hotel is a little difficult to find, due to the fact that it is off the beaten path and the street signs are quite small. But that really isn't the fault of the hotel itself. Every other problem I had is the fault of this hotel.

The desk clerk was friendly, but a little too chatty. I didn't ask for suggestions about what to do in the area, but I got five minutes of them anyway. She offered me the option of a first floor or third floor room, which was nice because no other hotel on my trip had given me the option. She mentioned that the first floor room was close to the elevator, which I didn't find to be a problem. What she failed to mention was that it was right by an entrance, which was a problem. The walls muffled the sounds from other rooms, but every time someone used that entrance door, which was almost constantly throughout the stay, we could hear it loud and clear. Worse yet, the door required the use of the keycard, and my keycard only worked half the time on that particular door.

The hallway was ice cold, probably close to 55 degrees. When we entered the room I noticed two bottles of water with tags hanging on them that said "VIP" in large letters. I thought that was a very nice touch. Considering the price hotels charge these days it was kind of nice for the hotel to do something like that. Unfortunately, after my wife had opened one of the bottles she informed me that she read the rest of the tag. First, the VIP was actually the logo for the brand name "VASA pure" with a vertical line that looks very much like the letter "I" placed between the V and the P. This water was nothing more than filtered water from the municipal water supply of Plymouth, Michigan. And on the bottom of that tag, in fine print, it informed us that the water was provided for our convenience, but if we consume it we would be charged $2.50. This water was out in the open, not in a mini bar where you would expect to pay. Is it just a coincidence that Marriott would provide water with a logo that just happens to look exactly like VIP? This water is bottled exclusively for Mariott, so they got to choose the name. This was nothing more than a cheap trick to get yet another $2.50 out of customers who are already paying too much for a generic hotel room. The $2.50 isn't a big deal, but the deception most certainly is.

The hot tub was functional and nice to use, but the pool was too cold. The fitness center was small, but not bad for a hotel. This hotel charges extra for breakfast, which has become pretty much standard in all other hotels. This hotel needs to realize they are not in a large city, but rather Bettendorf, Iowa. If you are going to charge almost $150 for a room, I expect free breakfast, or at least a couple of free bottles of water.
