“Odd experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2011

The price was great and it is very close to the marina and the Wisconsin border. If you are looking for a no frills place to sleep, this is it. I was told it had WiFi but I did not have my laptop. They did have HBO

This was one of the oddest motel experiences I have had. Not a bad experience, but odd. The showers were great. The mattresses were barely acceptable. The motel was in general disrepair. Ice machines did not work. Soda and laundry was out of order. Trim around doors was unmatched and falling apart (not a big deal, just odd). We had to change rooms due to broken heaters, hair dryers, toilets, telephones, etc. Bathrooms in both rooms were clean, not fully stocked, but clean.

Donuts in the morning were freshly made and excellent. Coffee was watery, warm not hot and in short supply. There was a microwave in the room to heat your coffee or tea. Fridge in room. Snow removal was prompt.

"Shash" at the front desk was odd but very accomodating and professional. He seemed kind of lost like it was his very first day on the job, but 5 days later he was not any smoother. Really nice guy, just odd. He worked hard at selling the property. He was always willing to work with us. He did not give any information to visitors, which I respected.

If they charged a higher rate, I would have left angry. For $35/night, I was ok with it and will stay again. As long as you don't take things too seriously, this is a decent value. This place has potential to be a really nice motel, but then the price would rise. This site asks me if I would recommend this place to a friend... depends on the friend. Some would be appalled. I was entertained.

“THE ABSOLUTE WORST HOTEL IN THE WORLD”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2010
1

I have stayed at many different hotels throughout the country, and, indeed, the world. This is, without question, the absolute WORST hotel I've ever experienced, and I will NEVER set foot in it again.
This used to be a nice, friendly place, with clean, comfortable rooms and a friendly staff. NO MORE. Now it's run by people who barely speak English and who act as though they were there by accident, not because they're actually employees.
Let's start with check-in. The manager on duty had no idea who I was, even though I had called only a few days before to make my reservation, and, in fact, had been contacted by the same manager "Raj" only the day before to confirm same. Then, when I paid him, in cash (no way they were getting my credit card info), he tried to short-change me, and somehow "forgot" how much I had given him initially.
Now for the first night. The toilet made a sound like a jet engine, that actually lasted for five full minutes. Not only that, but the toilet leaked, at its base; I had standing water in the bathroom. The thick deposit of rust around the toilet base clearly indicated that this was an on-going problem, and, obviously, had not been fixed.
When I brought this to the attention of the "manager", a young 20s type, he merely asked me if I wanted to change rooms. Well, of course I did! No word of apology, by the way, either.
My room was not cleaned when I returned; there were no signs to hang on the door.
Well, the replacement room was, if anything, even worse. The toilet made a ghastly sound, but, thankfully, it didn't leak. Once again, however, the room was not cleaned, and, when I asked the manager about it, he merely shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, you didn't ask for the room to be cleaned."
"Excuse me," I told him, "I left a notice on the doorhandle, asking for the room to be cleaned."
"Oh, that doesn't mean anything. You have to tell us when you check in that you want your room cleaned."
Are you kidding me?
The flimsy, pathetic excuse was that rooms are not cleaned because the hotel is afraid that the maid will steal things from the guests. Do you believe this rubbish?
Needless to say, the door notice was "stolen" the next morning, when I finally checked out.
The tv set & phone were so old that my mobile would actually turn them on, just by setting it down on the table. The lighting is horrendous, and the room decor is at least 20 years old, and in tatters.
The hotel advertises free wi-fi, but it is impossible to connect to their network; it's simply not available.
The electrical wiring in the guest rooms is minimal at best, and dangerously overloaded with multiple cords plugged in. I had to unplug the room heater, microwave and desk lamp just to charge my mobile. I didn't dare plug in the hair dryer.
The hotel owners, apparently, see nothing wrong with allowing feral cats bearing dead mice to roam the corridors at all hours of the day. This is absolutely disgusting, and, I'm sure, a significant healthcode violation.
The hotel owners also, apparently, see nothing wrong with allowing guests to stand immediately outside the front doors and smoke cigarettes, and to also leave their cigarette butts all over the front steps. What happened to the fifteen-foot rule?

“A must stay, Visit once a year!!!!”

Sandpiper Inn is a must stay. We have family in IL and stay at the hotel each year, for the past 3 years. Our recent trip we notice its under new management and the staff is very friendly (they make you feel like family), and the rooms are amazingly clean. The room prices are the best prices possible, this time we got the jacuzzi room for cheaper than a regular room in the area! A must stay, and a life time visitor!

“Home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

It has been 4 years and 7 months since I was at the Sandpiper with my Mother.
She was a cancer patient and we enjoyed staying at the Sandpiper, everyone
was so nice to us. I miss everyone there and most of all I miss my Mother.
She passed away on 3-14-05. If I ever have to go to Midwestern Regional
Medical Center I will stay at the Sandpiper. May God bless each and every one
of the staff at the Sandpiper.

I visited Winthrop harbor for cancer treatment center. We rented a room at Sandpiper Inn and we will for rest of our trips. Hotel staff is so co-operative, loving and kind. They know how to treat individual. Very cozy place. Regarding property, they have remodelled the property so one would like it. We love this place.

  • Liked — Hotel Staff, services and friendly environment.
  • Disliked — Staff is so loving so you don't feel like leaving from there. :)
