“Great if you're looking for a homey experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I recently spent two nights in the small (twin bed only) Walnut room at this bed and breakfast, and had a perfectly fine stay. I was most impressed by how thoughtful everything was - from single gum packs and advil packs in the drawers, to an extra toothbrush, to a kitchen stocked with coffee and tea and all cooking instruments you might need. The room was small and a bit worn, but I knew that going into it, and the private bathroom was spacious and clean. Staying here is very much like staying in a house, rather than staying in an inn. There are only 3 rooms in the building I stayed in as well as a full kitchen and two sitting rooms, and it felt more like staying with roommates than staying in a hotel. This comfort and homeyness makes me think that this would be the perfect spot for a longer term stay, but I wouldn't necessarily come back for a short weekend trip (just because I'm looking for more amenities on that sort of trip, nothing against the B&B). The B&B is on the edge of an up and coming area, with lots of nice places down division towards wicker park, but I didn't feel 100% comfortable walking back alone at night (as a young female)... I didn't experience anything unsavory, but would have been happier to be with someone else! The only negative part of the experience for me was that there was a waterproof mattress cover on the bed and it was really loud! It made it difficult to move around at all as I slept without waking myself up.

Would recommend this B&B, specifically for a longer term stay when you'd like access to a full kitchen and a little more space. (I can't comment on the breakfast as I didn't partake).

“Writers' Residency”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

I recently returned from a writers' residency sponsored by the house of Two Urns. Those of us in attendance had submitted a brief application stating what our writing plans were for the residency. After being accepted, we were given a stipend that covered breakfast, lunch, a full week CTA pass, and guest pass to a nearby health facility. We were in residence for the week with the primary purpose to write. I was in a spacious, very nice and comfortable room. I got a great deal accomplished, enjoyed meeting the hosts and other guests, and had an overall wonderful week.

I am glad you were able to join us for one of the writer residencies of the Chicago Art Retreats and were able to accomplish some of your literary goals. Every winter we set aside a few weeks to host writers or visual artists of all disciplines to stay with us while they write, research or renew their creative souls. We have had 3 great sessions so far and are looking forward to more in February. Applications for partial Fellowships are available every May for the upcoming year.

“House of Two Urns Descriminates!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

After reading the online reviews for the House of Two Urns, I was eager to stay in what appeared to be a charming B&B with great food!

However, I just tried to reserve three nights' stay with the owner and I was denied access to her establishment because I travel with a service dog. I am blind, and my German Shepard Seeing Eye dog is my link to independent mobility. Without her, I cannot walk safely (especially in a big city like Chicago). The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 protects my right to equal access to any business where the general public is allowed. In addition to the fact that each state, including Illinois, has its own state law, guaranteeing me and my dog access.

I understand her concerns that some guests may have allergies and that this is also her home, but it is equally unfair to deny me the same access she would allow someone else. I'm sure her business is very nice, but discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated in our culture.

Please, though you may choose to stay at the House of Two Urns, if you've taken the time to read this review, please also take the time to inform the owner that you do not condone her discrimination.

Thank you.

As we have two separate buildings, each with 5 or less guestrooms per building and are owner-occupied we are exempt and are not required to provide ADA compliant rooms. We are sorry that she was so excited about staying with us and was not able to do so. We were unable to accommodate her in a private room that would have been suitable for a guest with a service dog. Small inns are not required to make every room ADA compliant and the only room still available was not suitable. We have accommodated blind, vision-impaired, hearing-impaired and physically challenged guests in our 20 years as innkeepers and try to work with each guest to find the best room to suit their unique needs, sometimes we are not able to accomplish that, especially when the request is made just one week prior to arrival. We do not consider it discrimination, but accommodating everyone in the best possible manner to ensure all our guests have an comfortable stay at the B&B.

“Unending supply”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

I really hesitate to write my glowing review of the Two Urns, because it will get too busy to book for my next Chicago stay. The room was cozy, comfortable and quiet. The breakfasts were excellent, the kitchen was supplied with all I needed, if I wanted to cook, the wireless connection was convenient, and the unending supply of hospitality was wonderful. I went for the homemade jams and I was not disappointed. Easy walk from the train...I'll be back.

“Very much a quirky UK Style B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We booked rather late on and split our stay between The Ruby Rooms and the Two Urns. The lady who runs the B&B was very friendly and welcoming and had made a real effort to ensure everything one would need has been accommodated for, and it really is everything the bathroom cabinet was very well stocked. Breakfast was very nice and the accommodation comfortable, although perhaps a little too quirky for my taste. Very close to the metro, shops, parking and garage available.

If you are a seasoned B&B visitor, and like a quirky style, this one is for you...
