“Not up to usual service and standards of Embassy Suites”

I had booked a corner suite (non-smoking) online months earlier, as I had to be in Chicago for a conference. Check-in and am surprised to hear I am placed in smoking room. Ask for non-smoking room, but was told none available. Found that odd, as it was early in the afternoon. SInce I had work to complete before late afternoon appointments, I took the smoking room.

When I walked in the room, I was shocked at the condition of the room. It looked as if a brawl had raged in the suite: hole in bathroom door, cigarette burn on toilet seat, long burn marks on living room area carpet, scuffed-up furniture, and stains on couch. Moreover, there was extensive mildew/mold in the corners of the shower/tub. No bureau/drawers in bedroom, but there was a bureau in the living room. Was quite surprised by the run-down condition of the room. Later, I found the refrigerator had not been cleaned either.

Bed was fine, and HVAC controls worked. I tipped the maid well each day and received decent maid service.

As others have noted, the made-to-order breakfast line took a very long time, even at the weekday opening time. I skipped the line on the weekend mornings, as I had 8:00 AM appointments a few blocks away. I worked late in my room two nights, and made the mistake of ordering room service one night. Thirty-five dollars for a pizza that was perhaps the worst representation of Chicago deep dish I have ever encountered. Skipped the evening receptions as I had no interest in waiting in line for a bowl of bar snacks and a glass of juice.

One final warning: Asked for a cab when I checked out as I had an early morning flight. No cabs in sight, and finally had to settle for a livery cab parked outside hotel. Cost to O'Hare was nearly $30 more than a cab.

Will definitely not stay at this property when I return to Chicago.

Room Tip: Corner suite was quieter than those fronting atrium.

“Great Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

I spent a week at the Embassy Suites in Nov. 2011, I was there for a conference and pleasure. It was a very nice hotel and I had a great view of the lake. It was family friendly, had a very nice breakfast every morning, had free happy hour in the evening, Room was extremly clean. You have to pay an additional $15.00 per day for wifi, I thought this was a ridiclous charge seeing as how much I was paying to stay the hotel it should have just been included. I did enjoy the hotel staff, they were all very polite and friendly. One staff member arranged for our limo rides. Another staff member, named Shirley Bailey, whom was working in the breakfast area on the days I saw her, was extra helpful and friendly. She had a huge smile that was great to see in the earlier hours in the morning, she was eager to help, and was always happy. I made sure to tell management about her before I left because she truly made my stay at the hotel much nicer. I would reccommend this hotel to everyone.

“Disappointing Stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

After scouring Trip Advisor for a decent Hilton brand hotel (to use up lots of points) in downtown Chicago location for hours, we finally settled for the Embassy Suites because of the suite since we were traveling with 2 teenage boys. Also, the pool and free breakfast seemed to be a bonus.

Once we got to the hotel, the outside and huge lobby area looked pretty. Once you open the door to your room, you're in for a major disappointment. The rooms are terribly dated - the decor was meh, our headboard that was nailed to the wall came off and the carpet gamey which gave the room a dirty feel. The pool was packed to overflowing the first 2 nights we were there so the kids gave up after that.

The free breakfast was a complete joke. There were 2 lines about 40 deep each waiting for the buffet breakfast. After waiting 20 minutes in line, the breakfast was a disgusting disappointment of cold, runny eggs, canned fruit and substandard pastries. But then again, you get what you pay for. We learned our lesson and ate breakfast out for the next 6 days.

The positives: super convenient location, the view of the lake from our room, fast elevators, nice staff. . .and the fact that that we didn't spend too much time in the hotel since there's so much to do in Chicago!

We're a family that travels for business and pleasure a great deal and have stayed in many types of hotels over the years. This is the first time that we were disappointed with our hotel choice based on other Trip Advisor reviews. I'm so sorry that we wasted our points on this place. This is nothing what you'd expect out of an Embassy Suites in one of the largest cities in the country.

“Terrible experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Be careful.. you may stay in a smoking room even if you have booked 2 rooms in the hotel for more than a month ago. Terrible experience and the inconvenience of having to change rooms. Will never come back.

“Always a good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Spent the New Years eve day/night/overnight at the Embassy Suites Lakefront Chicago. Used room service twice and they were quick and awesome w/their service especially as the hotel was packed that night. Check in was pretty quick too as the line was not too long and moved nicely. It was a fun experience to have new years eve at the hotel as the revelers were quite in the mood at midnight and the hotel staff/security were mostly okay w/the revelers having some fun. I think everyone came out of their room at some point to celebrate and those in the lobby were vicitims of extra toilet rolls being thrown from the upper floors (all in good spirit though)... After about an hour, security started to make the rounds and I was glad. Enough revelery by this time. Breakfast was the usual stuff at Embassy's the next morning and everything went well. Like this place and will come back as it's proximity to Navy Pier and Michigan Ave. are perfect.
