My wife booked a reservation online at this campground for one night figuring that we might just stop for a shower and not actually stay the night. Upon arrival at about 11:30 AM we were told that we were too early to check in. I mentioned that we were making good time and might just want to use the facilities to clean up and be on our way. The manager (proprietor?) offered a half-day option for about $18. It seemed like a fair deal so I paid the fee. He then told me to park our minivan (with a big cargo carrier on top) nearby. My wife and three kids piled out and the manager immediately came out and said he didn't realize that there were "so many" of us and said it would be another $15. I'm not sure why he thought two people would be traveling in a van loaded like that. He had been friendly at check-in but was now rather gruff. Without having any other options I paid the additional fee.
The showers were located in an aging, converted single-wide trailer house with a covered porch/waiting area. The shower facility was basic, but clean and functional, It had two stalls each for men and women. Someone was already in the men's showers. The hot water ran out after just one of us were done, and we were being as quick as possible.
I paid $33 for an ice-cold shower. I pondered complaining but after our last interchange decided against dealing with the manager again, so we packed up quickly and left. We were probably there a total of 30-40 minutes.
As it turned out, our full-night reservation cost was the same as the "half" that I was offered. Further, the full night presumably included shower facilities for no additional charge (at least, that was the indication on the website.) It would seem that the manager saw an opportunity to take advantage of a travel-weary family. I will not stay there again, nor will I recommend it to any of my 90+ family who may have occasion to stay in Salmon for a future reunion.
Note that I am not commenting on the overnight campground services. If my experience with the shower facilities is any indicator, I recommend extreme caution before making a reservation here. At the very minimum, call to ask what you're getting for your reservation so you won't be surprised by extra charges if you have more than 2 in your party.
