We stayed on the 5th July 2008 one night at this, what we thought would be a great, B&B. It turned out to be a disappointment. The home is beautiful, the grounds are nice and well looked after and the breakfast room, lounge and living area are very tasteful but some of the staff (we wouldn't want to call them inkeepers) are lacking interest.
When we arrived at the Inn at around 5 pm there was nobody there to welcome us so we left and came back an hour later. Somebody was home at that time. He showed us around and said "make yourself at home". We asked him a few questions about restaurants and he was very helpful and gave us a good map and driving instructions. We talked to him a bit more, had some more questions and he was o.k. Steve turned up, he was the one we had had email contact with.
A couple of weeks prior to our stay at the Inn we asked Steve if it was possible to have breakfast a little earlier because we knew that we had a long day ahead of us. Steve mailed back that that was no problem. When we tried to work out a time we wanted to have breakfast we were surprised that it now did seem to be a problem. Steve had been ill and did not feel to good. The other man (his father?) and Steve were discussing who was going to prepare our breakfast and neither of them were very keen. We felt rather 'too much trouble' and when they had agreed that one of them could "fix us an egg or so" we decided (much against our will) to leave later and join the other guests for breakfast at 8. The breakfast was one of the reasons for choosing the Inn.
Later that evening we boiled some water to make a cup of tea and we spend 15 minutes looking for a spoon. We did not find one and yet again there was nobody there to ask. It seemed as if we were the only people in the house.
We had booked the Hemingway Room for 3 people. 2 Adults and our 17 year old son. The room was not very big. Nice colours on the walls but no pictures or decorations. It looked a bit "naked" compared to other B&B's we have stayed in. Later we found that the room had a sort of hidden cupboard with more than enough space for 2 suitecases. We would still say the room is not really suitable for 3 adults.
When we wanted to go to bed we found out that the sofa (for our son) had not been made up. Luckily we found somebody in the kitchen. No idea who he was but he seemed to know his way around because he managed to give us a some sheets so WE could made the bed! We refused to do it ourselves and he started rather clumsily to do it for us. Sheets were obviously not made for the sofa because they didn't fit and there was no quilt or blanket. Our son didn't mind that because it wasn't cold. The queen bed was extremely comfortable with lots of pillows!! The sofa was as hard as a plank. Lucky our son didn't mind about that.
Then the breakfast. It was no disappointment!! Really, a 3 course meal was served. All of it delicious. What was meant to be hot was hot, what was meant to be fruit tasted of fruit etc. Great. Unfortunately the staff spoiled it a bit. The blanket/sheet guy was there. Still no idea who he was. He obviously had not told Steve because he didn't mention it at all, let alone say sorry. There was not even a 'good morning' from neither of the guys. They done there bit, served the breakfast in silence, we poured the coffee ourselves and made great conversation with other guests. There were still no spoons around and no idea if we were meant to wonder around opening draws and cupboards looking for one. We left after breakfast.
The Inn at Ellsworth has a great deal of potential. The location/surrounding/grounds are fantastic. The house and its contents superb. Unfortunately we felt that some of the staff was uninterested, not all that friendly and not the type of people to run a B&B where you want to feel at home but where you do want to be treated as guests.
