My fiance and I always read the hotel reviews before we make reservations, but we typically do not make our decisions entirely on the reviews. However, I think that both of us will read the reviews more carefully and take them more seriously.
We decided to take a last minute trip to Treasure Island and thought we would bring our labs with us as they are very much part of our family. We were very excited when we read that the dogs are allowed off their leashes and there was an area for the dogs to swim (a big plus when you have water dogs). We were looking forward to taking our dogs to pet friendly resturants, dog beaches, and Fort De Soto State Park. We were not surprised by the condition of the room as it is a pet friendly resort and motel.
When we arrived at the motel we were greeted by the owner who seemed delighted that we had arrived and was happy to meet our dogs. We immediately let our dogs off their leashes and allowed them to swim. The only concern we had at the time was a golden retriever who was constanly barking and growling at our dogs. The owner did keep the dog on a leash.
We enjoyed taking our dogs with us as we ate lunch and walking our dogs on the board walk.
I took my dogs out outside without leashes to use the restroom. We walked downstairs and one of my dogs saw a man who he wanted to meet. He was a little scared and let out one bark. I immediately called my dog to me (it is amazing what dog training classes can do) and we used the restroom facilities. The guest (wait scratch that.. long term renter) with the golden retriever told me that I should leash my dogs. I took the dogs back to the room. We grabbed their leashes and decided to take them to the beach. When we opened the door we were greeted by the owner who informed us that we needed to keep our dogs on a leash until we introduced them to the environment. (Our dogs are very aggressive and you might get attacked by kisses)
When we returned from the dog beach I forgot our hotel key in our truck. My fiance was waiting with the dogs (on leash) outside of the room when another permanment resident and her dog walked up the stairs. My dog let out a bark and was wagging his tail eager to play with the dog. When the owner called from downstairs asking if our dogs were ok. Dogs barking? What? They do that?
We decided that it would be in our best interest to leave and go home and cut our weekend short. It seemed at this point that we were going to be watched by the permanent resident with the golden retriever.
We did not inform the owner of our departure as it was late and we were told to leave our key on a hook when we were leaving. We never received a phone call from the owner asking why we left, which seemed to be the obvious thing to do as a motel owner. They were not at full occupancy when we were there.
We are going to dispute our hotel charges with visa as we feel we were harassed.
