This was the 6th time I have stayed at the Signal Inn, the 5th with my family. The location cannot be beat - in the middle of the island, right along the beach. We've stayed in 4 of the larger units. All are nicely appointed - clean, good beds, laundry in the units. The kitchens are fantastic - allowing us to eat 'at home' most of the week, and then head out to Amy's or the Sanibel Grille now and then. Units are individually owned, but managed by Chuck and LeAnne. We've had very few issues over the last 6 years, but any time there was a small problem, it was quickly addressed.
The pool area is centrally located - there may be kid noise now and then, but there is no alcohol allowed at the poolside, so nothing negative along those lines, and they close it at a reasonable hour (9PM?)
Beach is accessed by way of two well-made and maintained boardwalks that cut across the mangrove barrier. The sand bars change every year, but there have been times that we can walk out for 100 yards at low tide. We've seen dolphins, lots of shore birds, sea stars and other sea creatures, especially after storms. Shelling is amazing - I keeps saying I won't bring any home this time, and then... I've collected probably 20 different types of shells, and hundreds of them, including 2 9 inch long horse conchs.
If you want high-rise, luxury resorts, Sanibel and the Signal Inn are not your place. If you want Florida the way it SHOULD be - beautiful and preserved, and quietly fun, this is your place.
You might also want to hit a Fort Myers Miracle game some evening - my family has a great time there every year.
