The Beach Club is located near the southern end of St. Augustine Beach, on the way to Crescent Beach five miles (8 km) farther south. Restaurants and grocery stores are within walking distance, but a car is needed for larger shopping centres.
As previous reviewers have pointed out, the furnishings are dated, but the upside is that all rooms are being renovated with new furniture, cabinets and plumbing, including marble countertops in kitchen and bathroom. We had a peek at the new décor, and were impressed. We were told the refit should be completed by the end of 2009. Despite the construction, the resort was quiet because it was low season and many rooms were unoccupied.
Our one-bedroom unit (401) was located in a projecting wing of the south building that gave us a good view of the beach to the east, though not the 180 degree view afforded by the two-bedroom units. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped (although as Canadians, we would have appreciated a teapot). The unit was spotlessly clean. One of the two TV sets would not work, and the efficient maintenance staff quickly replaced it with a new one. We were divided in our opinion of the king-size bed: one thought it was too soft, the other found it just right.
We stayed during a cold snap in the first week of February, so were unable to spend much time on the lovely beach that conveniently fronts the resort. The outdoor pool was a bit chilly at this time of year, but the adjacent Tennis Club has an indoor pool (and exercise room) to which guests have free access.
The front desk staff was unfailingly cheerful, courteous and helpful. We particularly appreciated the free shuttle service from the resort to St. Augustine, available when you buy a ticket ($21) for the Red Train, one of two open-air trolley services that circulate through the downtown historic area, dropping off and picking up passengers along the way.
Besides renting rooms, this resort is affiliated with the two big timeshare exchange companies, RCI and Interval International. We travelled on an RCI exchange. With the renovations, we hope the resort, currently an RCI Silver Crown hotel, will regain its previous Gold Crown rating. It deserves it.
