“Mixed Bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2012

I usually don't write reviews of where we stay but this one merits some comments as I appreciated the comments I read both before and after staying at this resort.

We booked Westgate Vacation Villa's through a travel site that offers "secret hotel" getaways for a two night last minute trip to Orlando for golf and Universal Studios. We are Florida residents so were really looking for a nice, reasonably priced place to sleep and took a chance on booking an un-named hotel. Westgate was billed as a "4 star condominium resort" which sounded great for the price and since it was only two nights we really didn't need house keeping services. The room turned out to be a one bedroom suite with kitchenette (I suspect what they list as a studio) which was a nice amount of space for the price paid especially since we like having a separate bedroom and sitting area. Although it had sliding patio doors that opened to a screened-in area there was only 6" between door and screen so no actual balcony that could be used for sitting outside. The decor of the suite was very dated--mid 80's pink laminate furnishings, old fiberglass bath and wall surrounds and a CRT television. Definately not 4 star quality. It was clean however and the building was right by the pool and pool bar with a very friendly bartender.

We own a timeshare with a different company and are used to the check in process of being routed through the "welcome center" to get our parking pass/welcome package. We however have never seen a process as complicated and long as what we experienced at Westgate. Although I waited only 5 minutes to reach someone at the check in counter it took the agent more than 15 minutes to check us in even though it was pre-paid reservation and they had the ticket waiting. He would not give me the keys directly after finally finding us a room (the resort was almost empty as it is low season so go figure) and my husband was not allowed to wait in the car out front for me but was directed to park (I guess they knew it was going to be a long wait). After finding the room and getting our deposit and home info/phone number, the check in agent first called someone from VIP services to whom he handed our info and keys, left and returned and who then proceeded to take us to "Bob" to get our welcome package (we still don't have the key or directions to our room). Bob who was very nice, spent 10 minutes valiantly trying to convince us to join them for breakfast in the next two days and tour the property. Having done this before with our own timeshare property we were not interested in spending any of our short vacation time talking to timeshare salesmen so we refused politely. Bob then handed us, and our keys, off to a bell man who was to take us to our room. We told the bellman that we did not need his services and just to give us directions and we could get ourselves into the room. Wow! We are now 25 minutes into checking in! The bellman reluctently got us a map and drew us directions to the building we were staying in. As we left, we watched another bellhop loading an elderly lady onto a golf cart and then directing her husband to follow them in his vehicle so he could settle them in their unit. I'm not sure how much more time it would have taken should we have allowed them to take us to our unit.

So, we started with a bad taste in our mouth due to the lengthy check in process. A few drinks at the pool bar with the friendly bar tender made things better although the pool was closed due to an "accident in it" and the bar tender was upset with how long it was taking maintenance to show up and clean it. The timeshare resort is huge (3000 rooms according to the check in agent) with many buildings close together and looks more like a huge apartment complex than a vacation desitination. It was not anywhere near full during our visit and I would suspect that parking would be a struggle when all of the units are full.

All in all we had a good trip. The price paid for the room we got was good but I don't think we'd stay here again--will look for a true 4-star quality facility--even if it costs a bit more.

Room Tip: Ensure that you get one of the units with a balcony so you can sit outside.

Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear that the unit you were in had the adequate amount of space to meet your needs with the separate bedroom and sitting area. We apologize that your room did not have a balcony; as we have many different types of units to choose from. We are in the process of updating our buildings with a new color scheme, furniture and flat screen televisions. We apologize for the issue that you encountered during the check-in process. We will evaluate this with our management team to avoid this in the future. Thank you for your kind words concerning our bartender as we strive to provide the best customer service as possible. You are correct; we are a very large resort with just under 3,000 units. We are happy that you had a good trip and hope that you will give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations.

“Westgate .... take me away!”

An excellent vacation; clean grounds, clean rooms, clean pools, and close to the Disney Theme parks. This was our second year coming to this resort.
WE had the reduced Time Share Tour rate; the tour with Robert was excellent!
Our daughter loved the Mickey Mouse pool; we can't wait for the water park to be completed for our vacation at Westgate next year!

“Girls Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2012

In town for graduation and a girls weekend with my best friend.

The reviews on here had me a little worried about what we would experience when we go to Westgate. Check in was easy and did not have to wait. The accommodations were very nice. We had a 2 BR unit. There was no noise from outside or from other units. The layout of the unit was good. The beds were comfortable. The property was very centrally located to everything we did and everywhere we needed to go. We spent most of our time at Pool #2 which was nice. The hot tub wasn't heating properly and was fixed as soon as we notified the staff. We walked the property on several occasions and felt very safe on the grounds.

Cons:
I did not like the fact that you had to pay for internet service if you didn't have WiFi. That seems a little ridiculous.

The young man working the arcade was not friendly when I needed assistance in the game room.

“Vacation Resort with Pros and Cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2012

Just got back from a week in a 2-bedroom vacation villa. My family exchanged for this resort through RCI timeshare and may or may not choose it again. The look of the exterior of the resort is nice and with a tropical feel while the "Town Hall" (lobby area) has a grand feel. Once checked in, they went over where everything on the resort was and from there escorted us to our room on a golf cart (since the resort is very, very large and spread out). The bellman was also very helpful and gave us a tour of our rental. I can say that the bell service at the resort was the best part of the experience; any time my family or I needed to get somewhere without walking, a golf cart would be at our door within 10 minutes or so.

There are tons of pools, so no matter where you stay, there is one nearby (a plus!). The fact that there is a market on site was also very helpful for those little things we needed (milk, soda, water, coffee, etc.).

So, now to the complaints. First I'll say that our room was on the first of 2 floors. I first noticed a dead bug or two (mosquitoes maybe) IN the fridge. There was a dead bug on the floor of one of our closets and also one on the floor of one bedroom. I found a spider in my bed one night and when I had piled dirty sheets on the floor the morning of check-out, some bug ended up running out when I picked the sheets up. And one more instance when I was in the bathroom and a bug dropped down from the fan. Overall, I found it to be dirtier and more outdated than I would have imagined by pictures on the website.

For a 2BR unit, the kitchen was quite small and awkward. It was shaped as an L with the fridge at the end with just enough room to open the door; there was pretty much only enough room for one person at any one point in the kitchen. The bathrooms, though, were quite large and had great showers/tubs.

Overall, I would rate this resort as average - fantastic staff that helps you with anything, amenities aplenty, yet units themselves could use updating and be cleaner.

Thank you for taking the time to, in detail; to supply us with some fantastic feedback on your experience with our resort. We are so proud to hear that you experienced a seamless check-in and bell services process. We focus on providing a professional and enjoyable customer service experience that exceeds all expectations. As mentioned, we do have 14 pools on our property, and include a marketplace that provides the essential supplies and souvenirs that may be required during your stay. We are very disappointed to hear that you had some frustrations with the common pests that are prevalent in the warm climate that Florida provides. We do have a very aggressive pest control program to detect and eliminate any of these situations prior to guests’ arrival. We do have very spacious and luxurious rooms and we continue to upgrade and renovate them one building at a time during every available opportunity. We thank you again for choosing Westgate Vacation Villas as your vacation destination, and hope to see you again soon.
