We have toured castles in Europe, mansions & historic homes from Canada to Florida. Unlike some places which try to make you feel that they are doing you a favor by letting you pay to come in, the Nemours mansion makes you feel like a welcome guest. Not RUSHED.
Allow minimum of 2 hours 45 minutes. You begin with a short film at the visitor center. If you get there early, you could spend an additional 15-20 minutes reading the display. Theatre holds only 50, so that is the max number on tour at any scheduled time. Next you board two small buses to the mansion itself. One bus at a time is led to the door, where names are called, dividing people into groups of 6. Once in, there is a free coatroom, where I noticed a large supply of umbrellas to be used if necessary. Next, each guest is given a flower and the tour begins. Someone with a walky-talky directs each group on different paths, so there really is no back-up. The small size of each group enables each person to have a chance to get close to everything. I liked the inclusion of the basement mechanical systems, such as the ice making and water bottling facilities. This tour was about 80 minutes.
Next you can take a narrated bus tour of the grounds, including the classic car collection in the garage. At this point, a bottle of water is offered. This is another 40 minutes or so.
We went for the Christmas tour, however, if you go in spring or summer, you can walk the gardens as long as you wish. When finished, there is a set of benches on which to wait for a bus back to the visitor center.
Do eat before you go, there is no cafeteria, nor picnic facilities. Do use the rest room facilities at the visitor center, I saw no others. No children under 12 allowed.
