On a cold blustery day we ventured out to see if we could do any birdwatching. All the birds were smart and stayed home, but the park is wonderful. We did three short walks. The first was down to a beach where wetsuit clad surfers were doing their best to have some fun. It was relaxing watching them and walking the sand. Then we went to the old WW2 fort that they are slowly restoring and mounting information signs. The path up to the bunker was closed off but we still were able to view the ocean and contemplate how the army sat and watched the mouth of the bay day in and day out. The last hike was down to see the lighthouse which many folks on this site have photographed. We did not have a map, and randomly drove around. There was signage but if you did not know what things were, it was not helpful. I guess we could have gotten one at the gate, but although the gate was open, the booths were unmanned (do we did not have to pay.)
I do recommend this as a great place to visit in the winter. Hiking the beach and the woods both is as nice as summer, and you don't have to worry about crowds and heat.
