As the only natural history museum in the state, the Museum welcomes more than 75,000 visitors each year to experience an African watering hole, gaze up at a giant squid, encounter a jaguar face-to-face, and marvel at the diversity of shells from around the globe. Gallery highlights also include the only permanent dinosaur collection in Delaware, a simulated coral reef, and a Science in Action paleontology lab. Throughout the year, the Museum also hosts several special exhibits on national tour. « less

“No common sense”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We were traveling through the state of Delaware and hoped to break up the trip by stopping at what seemed to be a quaint museum. We came 45 minutes before closing and presented our science membership cards from home that entitled us to reciprocal admittance. unfortunately, the museum had decided that having a few arts and crafts tables constituted a "special day" and they did not need to honor their agreement. With only 45 minutes left, we were not going to pay full admission and had to leave with a bunch of disappointed kids.

It's bad enough that the state of Delaware charges outrageous tolls to all outsiders passing through their 11 miles of turnpike. We saw that this lack of hospitality extends to all areas

We deeply regret the negative experience you had when visiting the Museum but would encourage you to give us a chance to change your opinion for the better.

When the Museum has special events, such as on the day you and your family visited, due to certain agreements with our own members, we are, unfortunately, unable to honor reciprocal admissions. However, we gladly accept reciprocal admission on over 360 other days of the year and invite you to visit on one of those days.

Thank you for your time and your review and please stop by again soon. We'd love to have you back!

“Wonderful for grandchildren”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

This is a wonderful museum for both grandchildren and their grandparents. The films (movies) in the theater are excellent! There is a different film each time and they are always excellent. Also, there are other places where films are running. All of them are so interesting. Our grandchildren ages 11-5 like these films and the museum. The rear exhibit room has changing exhibits that are interesting. The dinosaur area has computer screens where the children can "build" their own dinosaur. One of the hallways has a simulated coral reef with colorful fish. The floor in the hallway is transparent, so you are walking on the surface of the water, looking down into the water and the reef. Definitely enjoyable for young children.

“Nice Museum to see Dinosaurs and Animals”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I went to the Natural History Museum for the first time this month and was pleasantly surprised. The Museum is fairly small but has plenty of entertaining exhibits. It would be a great place to take children- there is an educational center geared towards children in one section of the museum.

For the Delaware Museum of Natural History, I was surprised how much it had. However, I was also wondering why it didn't have any exhibits on the rich natural history of Delaware itself.

The museum features taxidermed animals and fossils from all over the world.

Overall, I would say this Museum is a pretty good value for a casual adult museum goer. This place would be a great place to bring your kid if they are interested in dinosaurs and/or other animals.

“Too priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

We visited the museum on september 2nd in the morning. It is not a big museum, only 1 floor. The film "Lonely voyage of a turtle" is worth viewing. Unfortunately they do not give discount to active Belgian military. The man at the reception doubted to give it, but the lady was determent; only discount for US military. The museum is too priced for what you get.

“Shell collection (mollusks) are amazing, Mineral collection is nice too”

This is a very nice, small, science museum. They have a nice egg collection from different species. The taxidermied animals are neat. Everything here is EASY TO SEE, no matter how small you are. My kids love it.
