We rented 3 homes for my parents anniversary. We all brought our dogs and stayed in the pet friendly homes.

The homes were in fantastic condition... The internet worked great. I had pretty good cell phone/Blackberry reception the whole time.

The resort staff went above and beyond to accomodate any and all needs.

I would highly recommend this resort. The people and the pups had a wonderful time!

After reading some of the reviews, I was concerned that the service would be deficient. I called the resort before going and spoke to a new manager whose job it was to make sure that the service was good. He reassured me, so I took the entire family. Thank goodness I was able to read past the negative reviews. The place was great and we had a wonderful time.

We stayed for the first few nights in the largest cabin - the 4-bedroom Caroga. What a gorgeous cabin! It's a true log cabin that looks very rustic but has all the modern amenities except for cable television. There were TVs but they they were only for watching a VCR tape or maybe a DVD. (We didn't watch the TV, so that's why I'm not sure about the DVD.) There was a full kitchen, two fireplaces, a supply of logs for a fire, beautiful bathrobes in the bedrooms, leather furniture, etc., etc. Everything is very clean and the towels were extra soft. The lighting was a little dark, so we had to request an additional lamp.

Unfortunately I didn't make the reservation far enough in advance, so the last night we were supposed to move to the lodge, but instead they moved us to two 2-bedroom cabins and adjusted the rate as an accommodation for our inconvenience. The smaller cabins were excellent, but not quite as luxurious as the larger 4-bedroom cabin.

Additionally my children were delayed one day in arriving because of weather problems at the airport, so Thad (one of the managers) was extremely nice in making accommodations for my children not showing up for one night. He didn't have to do anything because it wasn't the fault of the resort, but he did, and he scored a lot of brownie points with me.

The main lodge where the dining room is located is a very impressive building. We ate there several times. Lunch was always excellent but the one dinner was a little disappointing. The wine list was quite good with reasonable prices. (We ate at Fontenot's in Winter Park. Excellent cajun food and recommended.)

The spa is in a new building and it's gorgeous. We went for massages and soaks and facials and were pampered. I highly recommend the spa.

We never got a chance to go horseback riding because of the weather on the day we were supposed to, but we saw riders who looked like they were having a good time on the trails. There are no short 1-hour rides, just longer rides that leave twice a day.

The lake was a little small and disappointing. I was hoping for a prettier lake with rowboats, but that wasn't to be.

There is a problem with some kind of beetle that's destroying the trees. More than half of the pine trees in the entire area (not just the ranch) are dead. Apparently there's nothing they can do about it. Nature just has to take its course.

On the plus side, there are many wild animals that live here. We were 25 feet away from a full-sized buck moose with tremendous antlers. He was just casually grazing and didn't seem to mind the people gawking and taking photos. One of the employees saw a black bear on the approach road in the morning and another one saw an elk with her young.

Overall, the resort is exceptional and wonderful for families. The few times we asked for service (toilet paper, light bulbs, an additional lamp), they took care of all our requests. The staff was very friendly and helpful, to a person. I have no hesitation about recommending this resort. We'll be going back again.

We stayed in a two bedroom suite for two nights. The suite was amazing. There was one door that opened to a foyer, where there were two other doors: one led to a large bedroom with a queen bed, a sofa, night tables, and a full bathroom, with soaking tub and beautiful large stone shower. The other door opened to a living room, another bedroom with a king bed and sofa, and other furniture, and a large bathroom (same as the other one). The setting was gorgeous, and the furniture and floors throughout were beautiful. Lots of old farm-y furntiure, antique stuff, so much of it, all over the place. Cabinets full of cool stuff on display--a whole collection of old scales, or old tapestries hung on walls, samples of barbed wire from the 1880's framed and hung on the walls. The restaurant in the lodge was NOT cheap, but was certainly better than adequate. We didn't eat at the Ranch House. We did a half day horse back ride, with promisees of cantoring, but two of us, admittedly inexperienced, got mules that were Grand Canyon rescues. It was pleasant enough, but our mules didn't have different speeds--they were either sort-of-on or off. It was fun and nice though. There was no TV in the room, and as other said, we got internet one night, not the rest of the time. (OMG--no tv or internet!! what ever will we do?!).
As far as service, I have this to say. One of the four lobby people was excellent: Samantha. The others were as described--uncaring, or more likely, just untrained. The waitstaff in the restaurant were extremely friendly, and very slow and inefficient. Also simply not trained. I have waited on tables, and a little tweaking would go a long way.
That being said, I would highly recommend this place, as it was just so very cool. It is not pretentious.

Kudos to Devil’s Thumb Ranch! Our son was married there a couple of weeks ago and everything—facilities, food and service --were all first rate.
The facilities for an outdoor, Colorado style wedding are incredible—and amazingly convenient for those guests staying at the Ranch. We held the rehearsal dinner in a large white tent adjacent to the lodge. We were a bit concerned when we first saw it—just a bunch of picnic tables with a wood chip floor. However, by the time we arrived for the dinner the room had been made over with wonderful white table cloths, candles and flowers on the tables and it looked great. (The candles and flowers were courtesy of my wife so check that out if you are planning a dinner). It made for quite an “elegant” BBQ.
The wedding itself was held at the open field “wedding site” adjacent to the lodge—“rustic elegance” is the best descriptor. The Ranch staff fastened white cloths to the log benches where the guests sat. The view was extraordinary with a large meadow and snow capped peaks (even in late June) off in the distance framing the bride and groom. A couple of special touches characterized the care the DTR staff showed throughout the weekend. There was a table of water, iced tea and lemonade set up about 30 minutes prior to the ceremony--greatly appreciated on a very warm day. Secondly, while most of the guests sat in the sun on the log benches, the staff set up a few chairs, under an umbrella, for several of the older guests.
After the ceremony, we adjourned for cocktails to a patio about 100 yards from the wedding site, with the same spectacular meadow/mountain views (also overlooking the lodge pool). The appetizers were great, there were a large number of tables (with shade) for our guests and even a separate location for the children to get non-alcoholic drinks.
The wedding dinner was held in a large wood paneled room adjacent to the patio. (As I mentioned, Devil's Thumb is extraordinarily convenient with the rehearsal dinner, wedding, cocktails and dinner held in four separate and distinct venues—yet all within a couple hundred yards of each other. ) The room is essentially an old barn the owners purchased in the mid-west, brought to Colorado, and reassembled as the second floor of their activity center. We particularly liked the large barn style doors that opened to that spectacular Rocky Mountain view.
Dinner itself was terrific—the entrée was a choice of buffalo or salmon with a pear apple salad. Cooking for 145 people can be a challenge but the Ranch staff more than rose to the occasion.
Our guests also enjoyed the new lodge (open less than a year), particularly the generous size of the rooms and bathrooms. Several families stayed in the Ranch’s cabins, located about a half mile from the main lodge. There are two four bedroom units that worked really well for an extended family that made the weekend something of a family reunion.
Overall an extraordinary venue with a capable staff that knows how to handle a major event. I liked Devil’s Thumb so much I will be using it for a small corporate event as well!

My wife and I stayed at the Devils Thumb for the first three nights of our honeymoon. First of all, the 2 hour drive from Denver airport seemed like 45 minutes because of the gorgeous scenery. When we did get to the ranch we were blown away by the location.

Upon pulling up to the front door of the lodge, we were immediately greeted by an employee who offered to help with our bags. Check-in was extremely quick and easy, and we were given directions to our room. I highly recommend requesting a first floor room with a view of the continental divide. There is still some construction going on in the front of the hotel and the views on the meadow side would be less than ideal. The rooms themselves were amazing. There was a lot of attention to detail put into decorating the rooms in a ranch style without overdoing it. The bathroom has a large soaking tub and a beautiful stone shower. The bathroom floors were heated, although we didn't use them since we were there in July. The bed was large and comfortable, and the leather chairs next to the gas fireplace were plush and relaxing. The patio had a bench, two chairs, and a table, all made out of natural-looking rustic wood. As per my request, there was champagne on ice in the room when we arrived, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg to have done. While we were sipping the bottle of champagne, the mini fridge in the room was a nice addition to keep the rest of our drinks cold.

The ranch has two restaurants -- a saloon and the Ranch House Restaurant. Both have full bars and a fair selection of wines & microbrew beers. We had both breakfast and dinner at the saloon, and both were fairly priced and exceptional. When they are able to, they use local meat and produce, and the freshness shows. In the Ranch House Resaturant, it is a bit more high-end. My wife very well versed on good food and were extremely impressed with the quality here. From start to finish, from service to food quality and presentation, everything was absolutely wonderful. There was a slight seasoning issue on one of the starters, but it was promptly taken care of and taken off the bill despite us telling them it was no big deal.

As for things to do around the rance, the hiking was gorgeous, the trails well-maintained, and the staff knowledgeable about the area and things to do. No staff at any time was rude or indifferent like some other reviews suggest. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anybody I know (and already have!).
