“Amazing Location, Remote, Quiet, & Off-Grid. I would live there!”

I took my fiancee there as part of a longer trip through Colorado (wished I had scheduled more time there). While at Rarus B&B we hiked the Alpine Tunnel Trail that skirts an isolated canyon -and I proposed to my (now) wife on that trail!
The two rooms at Rarus B&B are in a spectacular log cabin (this is not an average log cabin - the owner has built log cabins professionally for years and this one is so beautifully crafted from huge logs that it is actually much larger than it appears in the pictures on their web site). The cabin has everything including kitchen, bathrooms etc... One room and bathroom is upstairs (up log stairs that climb around the natural granite fireplace - we had that room) and the other room is on the main level.
10+ years ago I worked and lived further down Chalk Creek - which burbles right past this cabin.
Every night we were there, even though they were typically cold mountain nights at 10,000 + feet, we slept under the adequate quilts with the window open, just to hear the creek flow past. It's so dark there that the only way you know there are trees in front of you is because that's where you can't see stars.
Lewis and Manette are great hosts. They have been residents of the area for many years, and have just recently built this cabin, and home. They live on the property year-round (even when they can't drive there, but have to snowmobile/sled in a few miles)!
Manette agreed to prepare dinners for us - and did so at an amazingly reasonable rate! Lewis helped with dinner as well and because we truly enjoyed their company, we asked them to join us for dinner one of the nights.
The cabin is completely off-grid. They get all of their power from two solar arrays that track the sun during it's few hours shining into the canyon and they burn downed wood from their property to fire the continuous water heater which also heats the hot tub and the radiant floor heating. They also have a propane generator, just in-case their batteries are getting low.
You will want a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to get up the drive way (down when you're arriving, and up when you leave), but I believe they will pick you up in the "ghost" town of St. Elmo as well - which you can easily access in a normal vehicle. You could probably get to the top of their driveway in a normal car as well, but there is one area in the road (after you turn off from St. Elmo) the is a significant dip and some larger rocks protruding.
The cabin is closer to the ghost town of Hancock, Colorado, up the road from St. Elmo Colorado.
I really want to go back in the winter! I would also like to return in the summer and spend a week while exploring the beautiful and much-less-tourist-trod area! This is a magical, remote and no-nonsense place - you will not find frilly doilies, fussy teacups and stuffed teddy bears. You MAY see some elk in the meadow on the other side of the creek, and a living breathing bear might be a possible sighting as well!
