“A Great Hotel is More than Just a Room (The Better Angels are in the Details…..)”
The experience of traveling is often one of balancing expectations versus discovery, especially in these internet connected days of
on-line reviews/hotel websites and virtual tours.
In September my wife and I took a trip to Napa in celebration of a significant birthday. We stayed for several days at the Hotel Luca in Yountville. The photos on their website pictured a lovely property, conversations with staff while booking pleasant enough, actually somewhat enticing in comparison to conversations with the front offices of other lodgings in the area while researching the trip.
It should be noted that any trip to Napa, especially one deep into the wine country, is not an inexpensive venture. One should expect a certain level of amenities in terms of the comfort and appointment of the room and facility in general.
In this respect, the Hotel Luca was truly top shelf.
Our room was spacious and equipped with all the trappings of luxury that one could hope for. The bed was supremely comfortable, there was a Jacuzzi in the generously sized bathroom, the linens/towels/robes, etc., were all of the highest quality, there was a fireplace in the room and the sound system, iPod doc,TV, all combined to make the lodging as seductive as this type of indulgence should provide.
That said, what made our stay at Luca truly extraordinary was the competence, warmth and genuine likeability of the staff.
Our room was light-filled, ready on our early arrival and a bottle of chilled Prosecco awaited; a nice and welcoming touch.
The Hotel Luca is a small-ish property with only about 15 rooms; a factor in our choice as we are private people and generally, when traveling, require little from the hotel staff.
At Luca the staff seemed to grasp this, yet managed to strike the balance between respecting our privacy and going above and beyond in those instances when we made requests about dining reservations or recommendations about which particular vineyards might suit our desire for great wine and a nice spot for picnic.
When not exploring Napa and it’s wineries, any time we spent at the pool was always accompanied by discreet inquires by staff: need a glass of wine, more towels, different music, anything at all?
Not intrusive, just paying attention.
The details are of their solicitations/responses are, in single instances, unimportant. But the cumulative effect of their low key efforts in the service of making our stay as pleasant and easy as possible were a revelation and a very real treat.
These are hosts/hoteliers who take to their responsibilities with a very natural grace, and made our stay more like being at home, but with a staff at our disposal, attentive, but in the background and at the ready.
So, for what it’s worth, a call out to Ty, the general manager, and all the staff: Kelly, Jennifer, Jeremy, Berenice and Greg, this thank you is long overdue. Your professionalism and genuine warmth have earned my enduring respect and defined for me what a hotel staff should be about. You are, to paraphrase Duke Ellington, hosts ‘beyond category’.
(BTW, for those of you out there are who are dog lovers and will be visiting, please, a pat on the head from us to Pismo, a black lab of great nobility….)
As seasoned travelers who have stayed in hotels both high and low on several continents, we are normally skeptical of things, adopting a kind of show-me attitude. The Hotel Luca, I am very happy to report, exceeded all expectation.
