“Enjoy Paper-Thin Walls?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2007

To put it simply, this place is a great house, but has no real business being a B&B. Our review is based on the many B&Bs we've stayed at.
This place is highly overpriced (we paid $160 + $24 tax for one night). The reasons: It offers no real privacy because the walls are paper thin, the rooms are very small, our room was not heated (November stay) and the breakfast was something we whip up at home on the fly (scrambled eggs, fruit medley, a quarter of a chicken sausage and chocolate chip zucchini bread, which was actually really good). Also, we experienced the additional problem of using the whirlpool tub (advertised as "for two" but truly not the case) which steamed up the entire room (because of the chill in the air) which resulted in everything — including the sheets — feeling wet. So... we had to open the window. Feeling cold and wet led to a horrible night's
sleep for both of us.
Additionally, the power went out sometime before midnight and never came back on, so in the morning we had no running water (which meant no coffee).
On the plus side: The owner is very nice (though I think she could have taken off a little more than $20 for the lack of shower/coffee/toilet flushing in the monring) and we did spend quite a bit of time talking with her in the morning.

Final assessment: We will never stay here again (nor can we
recommend it) because we walked away feeling that we'd spent a small fortune and got very little for that money.

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2007

Vine Hill Inn was perfect for what we needed. A nice place to stay including nice conversation with Kathy. We started every morning with a very nice breakfast, ready each morning at the time we requested it. We toured wine country each day and came back to a nice bed and quiet place to sleep. Wireless internet helped us keep up with email each morning before breakfast, and at night we were able to watch our favorite shows from our laptop. We felt like this B&B was very reasonably priced, especially when you consider breakfast for 2 each morning.

“Warm and welcoming, felt like home!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2007

We stayed for 5 nights at the Vine Hill Inn. The rooms are small but cozy. We found Kathy to be warm and engaging. The breakfasts were delicious. Often we lingered over breakfast because we enjoyed talking with the other guests or Kathy. We enjoyed visiting with her and found her to be very helpful. She truly makes you feel like you are a guest in her home. We loved walking in the back through the vineyards and around the lake. We spent a couple of mornings sunning and swimming in the pool. Kathy gave us tips about local restaurants and sights. In the evening we sat out on our deck. It was a wonderful place to sip our wine and watch the stars.
We would definitely go back.

“Enjoyed our stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2006

My husband and I stayed here for four nights in September. Although the rooms are small, we really enjoyed our stay. The inn is located in a beautiful, quiet area, yet close to town for dining and shopping, and close to many wineries. Breakfasts were wonderful and Kathy was extremely accommodating and helpful.

“Worst B&B we have stayed at”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2006
1

The bottom line is that you were felt to be unwelcome and unrespected in various ways despite being a paying customer, besides the flaws in the accomodations. Definitely the worst bed and breakfast we have ever stayed at.

The website says you can make dietary requests at time of room confirmation, and while the innkeeper did agree to remove the down bedding and offer stuff we could eat at breakfast, she complained to us later in a slightly veiled manner that we were demanding, even going as far as to congratulate me for putting up with my wife. You did not feel welcome and there was no feeling that she wanted to improve our stay in any way she could.

There were visible dips in the mattress, showing its need for replacement. The bathroom appeared to not be cleaned as thoroughly as it could have (mostly the toilet), the sink faucet handle was loose and could be completely removed with your bare hands, and the toilet seat was loose. Water pressure was so low it took a long time to fill the clawfoot tub (we own a clawfoot ourselves).

The innkeeper had family guests (adults and children) who stayed over and were there during our visit. When we came back from eating in town, we found the innkeeper and her family guests eating dinner at the large table they use for the guests' breakfast and were told they hoped we had dinner already. They were very loud and uproarious downstairs at night for at least another hour, so there was no quietness or respect for the paying guests (despite 3 rooms being booked for a total of about $450 for one night). This experience is far from their website where they claim to encourage napping, reading, and taking time to become rejuvenated. In the middle of the night, we were awoken by rodents in the ceiling or wall, which we heard several times, and had trouble getting back to sleep.

The only thing we agree on with the other reviewers is the delicious breakfast (muffins, eggs, OJ, and more). That and talking to the other paid guests at breakfast was the only highlight of the visit.
