The Homestead was a last resort on a weekend with multiple wine festivals in the area. Claiming to be booked out, rooms clocked in between 90$ and 150$ (the latter for the 3-bed room).

Being directly situated next to Highway 101 was indeed the first warning - even though this particular corner is home to a patch of at least 6 different Motels. All of them were commanding ridiculous prices for the weekend (due to the wine festivals and bike races), but none of them were really frequented despite their claims of being "fully booked".

Despite the "booked out" response, this place was clearly almost abandoned, with only two or three shady characters populating the place from time to time.

Upon opening our rooms, we were met with the distinct stench of feces and air freshener. A closer inspection brought to light that raw sewage is flowing right behind the Motel.
Bathrooms in some rooms were decent while downright third world in others.
Reports of sticky floors and dirty, torn up bed sheets were soon to follow. Whoever had the opportunity resorted to using their own sleeping bags rather than touching the beds.

Upon leaving the next day, we had several independent reports of bed bug sightings and bites as well as some alive, captured specimen, so we all had to go into a paranoid washing spree of all items we had had with us on this trip.

The only positive thing about this Motel might be that Downtown and all your favorite SLO places are only a 10 minute walk away over the 101 overpass.

This Motel makes any average Motel6 appear like an oasis of Scandinavian minimalism...

Please do not stay at the Homestead. My daughter and I spent a night there Oct.13, 2012. It was parents week-end at the University and rooms were scarce. The furniture had ground in dirt and was sticky. There were huge rust colored stains on the side of the box springs (don't know what it was.) Just everything was dirty..walls, floors, furniture and the entry door. In the morning before leaving I took a shower. After I was all wet and reached to put the soap in the holder I noticed a dried up bit of feces on the soap holder. I looked around and found two more bits on the wall. It made me sick to my stomach. I am going to call the San Luis Obispo Health Dept. tomorrow and tell them all about it. That place should be shut down! It's a health hazard. It's a shame because San Luis is such a lovely place to visit.

I had been married about 3-4 months and thought I'd carry my bachelor-like habits of hotel finding on to married life. We called around and found the "best deal" (read cheapest) for a hotel for the weekend. Homestead gave us some deal like $50/night. That should have been a sign! Nevertheless, we said great, we'll take it. Finding the place was the next warning (the address is on the freeway on-ramp). The "pool" looks like its been under construction since I was in diapers. The room is not well lit and the carpet and sheets were filthy. We laid out clothes and slept on top of them, trying not to come in contact with anything in the room. I would have bet that there was at least 1 mouse/rat in the room and plenty of cockroaches. Horrible, horrible hotel. I learned my lesson to never stay at the cheapest hotel in town form that experience.

Dirtiest hotel I stayed in California. The people who owed that place don’t care; cleaning couple don’t speak English/ or pretend that don’t understand, management is lazy. The place is disgrace.

I booked into this motel on a Friday night and I needed a cheap place to stay. You definitely get what you pay for. The room smelled heavily of cleaner - some sort of carpet powder or something. The room is badly in need of a renovation - there are paint chips and various patch up jobs all over the walls; the bathroom looks like it was straight out of the 60s (al least the water was hot); but the worst thing was the carpeting - it was sticky and it literally blackened the soles of my feet!

On the plus side - the beds were comfortable - if badly made up - and the room had good AC.

I would personally never stay here again.
