“Good historic stay in Sacramento”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We only had one night to stay in Sacramento so we couldn't find anywhere more fun than staying on a riverboat. We booked online from Australia and had no problem with our booking or check in. As others have said, the Valet Parking is almost a must so should be factored in. We were only staying one night, so no problem.

Our room was on the riverside of the boat which was great and while the room was smaller than your average hotel room, it was no smaller than we had imagined it would be on a 1920's riverboat. We were near the front of the boat on an upper deck so there was a slight slant on the floor towards the rear of the boat...it is a boat after all.

The location is fantastic for visiting Old Sacramento Town and the Railroad Museum...we were there in early December so there was an excellent Christmas tree and lights display at night and most of the shops were open until 9.00pm.

Overall, we had a great time on the boat and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Get a Riverside suite...it's great to look out in the morning and just watch the river go by.

“An experience”

We had never stayed on an authentic river boat before so we experienced this on the Delta King. Small, clean, quiet, not luxury, but not motel 6. Cozy feeling with few other guests, just different. The bar is on board and a dinner hall with shopping across the street and many other variety of bars and restaurants. Next time I think we will stay at one of the other hotel nearby.

“One thumb up/one thumb down...”

Staying on the Delta King (or any boat) is an experiece, but I am not sure it is worth the cost. We spent two days in the Sac area and I decided to book one day at a B&B and one day on the Delta King.

First the negatives-
The rooms are small, bed, dresser, TV cabinet, and little else. The same goes for the bathroom and shower.
Because it is a boat the floors slant and there are low doorways and celings.
Very noisy due to the only walkway being right outside the door.
Valet parking is a must due to no other realistic parking options ($18 a day)

The postives-
The location is wonderful, right at old town Sacramento.
The breakfast included was really nice.
The shower was like a waterfall (no low flow shower head here)

It is possible that staying on the river side would have been less noise but I would choose one of our favorite local B&Bs before coming back here. Wonderful boat but not worth the higher cost.

“A fun night with cool character”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

The Delta King is a five story former river boat that has been brought back to life. It has a live theater, conference room, restaurant, bar and hotel style rooms. It was very windy and I was worried about the boat rocking in the water but it did not at all. Max, the evening night clerk is a great guy and very knowledgeable. The only drawback is a train that passes by some distance away. If you are a real light sleeper it may be disturbing but it is not terrible by any means. Do yourself a favor and spend the night on a cool riverboat that is clean, friendly and fun.

“A really disappointing time - noise ruined our stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We stayed one night at the Delta King on a US road trip from San Francisco to Las Vegas, and were really looking forward to a quirky choice of accommodation. Great location in the heart of Old Sac - valet parking right outside meant we could dump the car easily before heading 'onboard'. Given a room at the end of the corridor on the same deck as reception - very very small, but initially we didn't mind as we thought it added to the charm of staying on the boat.

The main issue during our very short stay was noise, and lots of it. Firstly from the 'emergency exit' swinging door outside our room, which led from the restaurant area. This was used through the night by staff presumably, and woke us up the next morning. Secondly you could hear chatting from reception just along the corridor. The last and worst cause of noise was a disco from a function room below - this was still blaring past 10 o'clock so I went to reception to see what was happening. Although very apologetic and after assuring me it was meant to stop, the loud music continued a short while after, and it was closer to 11 o'clock before all the noise stopped - it needed us to contact reception another few times by phone, meaning an early night was out of the question. The next morning we were woke up by the swinging door...

Breakfast was included and was had in the main restaurant, but this was a nightmare as the room was dominated by a very loud group of bikers (?) - we moved tables without asking having initially been put right next to them. We couldn't wait to finish our breakfast which was a shame as it was good. Turned out they were the ones having the disco last night...

We checked out and weren't even asked how our stay was - had the receptionist enquired we would have relayed all of the above to her, but there was no interest. Maybe we were unlucky with the noise, but the hotel really needs to consider whether it's a function venue or a proper hotel - in such a confined space you just can't have both discos and guest rooms and keep everyone happy.

Room Tip: Avoid the same floor as reception (especially near the swinging door) - go for the highest floor pos...
