Let me start by saying that we stayed at the Rancho Mirage Westin ONLY because we got a super deal through Priceline's price negotiator. It was very last minute and they appeared to be trying to sell rooms for a fraction of the usual cost, because the hotel appeared fairly empty when we got there. Fine by us! Normally, we would not pay for such an expensive hotel in the Palm Springs area because we live only an hour away, but this deal we could just not pass up.
The major downside to this hotel is their daily "resort fee" of $27. Unless you book directly through Westin (which I doubt many people do in this day and age), this fee will probably come as a surprise to you - it did for us. My husband paid what he thought was the full cost through Priceline, and when we arrived for check in, the front desk rep informed us of the "resort fee". This is apparently in place to cover all of their "amenities" - AKA, things you would expect from a hotel of this caliber - parking, wireless internet, use of the pool/gym, and so on. I am aware that many "higher end" hotels charge for parking, usually a $10-$20 charge per night. But $27 per day is rather exorbitant...we only stayed for one night so we paid without complaint. It is, however, a little ridiculous.
The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated. The bathroom in our room was really roomy, with double sinks, which I loved. The shower was a bit outdated, but clean, so it didn't matter too much. Beds are phenomenal. The grounds are very well kept, the pools (I think there are four or five throughout the whole resort) are large, clean, with plenty of deck chairs. The water is, however, heavily chlorinated, but that's better than the alternative! Overall, the it is a gorgeous resort. It was also very quiet, which we really liked (though that may have been because of the general lack of guests during our stay).
Our biggest disappointment, as an addendum to the "resort fee", was the overall LACK of amenities. For example, there is no complimentary breakfast (not even a measly continental? Come on, guys!), and no robes in the rooms (apparently you can get them "upon request"). For $27 per day, I would expect all this and more.
Contrary to other reviews, the resort is not "in the middle of nowhere", in fact, it is very near the freeway (but far enough away to avoid noise) and a large casino. The Cabazon outlets are a mere 15 - 20 minutes away, and downtown Rancho Mirage/The River (mall with tons of shops/eateries/theater) is about 5 minutes down the road. If you're there to explore downtown Palm Springs, you will have to drive a bit, but it's nothing too difficult.
Bottom line, the Westin Mission Hills is a beautiful resort with plentiful golf options and a fancy spa. It's expensive, but apparently possible to get an incredible deal at if it's during a slow weekend (don't be afraid to take a risk - they accepted a VERY low price from us!), just be sure to budget in that extra $27 a night.
