We wanted a little pre Christmas escape to celebrate my birthday and were told by friends that the Inn offered some special rates at this time of year. Happily, a 2 for 1 rate was in effect so we booked it. I was told that our room, #17, was on the main floor toward the back and was "small" and didn't have a fireplace. No problem. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised to find the room NOT small at all with a lovely window seat with a view of a small garden. The room was quiet which we always appreciate. The only flaw was the BED. The mattress felt bare of padding. No "pillowtop" mattress for sure. I have stayed in at least a dozen hotels last year and this mattress was the worst. (However, this problem may be fixed by now as I reported it to the front desk person upon checkout. She said she will note it - and she did, and that after the 3rd mattress complaint it would be replaced. This is reassuring)
After visiting the Monterey for 53 years, Pacific Grove is currently our favorite area. So true village like, with charming shops, great restaurants, uncrowded and wonderful to walk in. Much more low key and authentic than Carmel.
Our room # was 17 - El Marie Dyke and if the excellent rate is offered the next time we want to go, we will definitely return to Gosby House. The late afternoon wine & cheese offering is fresh and plentiful and the breakfast is hardy and delicious. And it's all served on real plates and with real utensils!
