I just returned from a week at the Newport Coast Villas, with a total of five people, three adults and two children and we had a wonderful time. To my surprise, the pools were heated well so that we could swim, even in Jan/Feb and there were lots of activities in the kids club (many were free). I was annoyed that they don't clean your room even once during the week (which is standard at all other non-Marriott timeshares) but the otherwise great service and truly stunning surroundings and ocean views made up for that one annoyance. Someone noted that the pull-out couches were bad but I have to totally disagree. Maybe we were in a newer or refurbished unit but we used both of the pull-outs in our unit and it was a new and unique design that was made of some type of foam mattress (it pulled out in three sections like an accordion) and everyone in the family agreed that they were absolutely the most comfortable pull-out beds we had ever used.
They also e-mailed me ahead of time to ask for a room request and since I new that it was such a huge complex of buildings I asked for an ocean-view room in a building that was also close to the main pool and kids club. They gave me a 3rd floor room in the 3900 bldg and it did have a spectacular view (I couldn't believe how beautiful the sunsets were and it was so clear we could see the lights on Catalina island in the evening) it was very close to the pool, playground (which includes a regular playground, the fire pit, basketball, a putting green, tether ball, and a sand pit with toys for your kids) and the kids activity center. If you have kids and don't want to walk far I would recommend that 3900 bldg or the 3800 next door.
We also drove to the Science Museum in Santa Ana, which was an easy drive, great fun for the kids and free since they accepted our membership cards from our local museum! We did take advantage of the HWY 73 toll road because it was just so convenient if you are driving north to any of the activities, amusement parks or airport in North Orange County or continuing on to LA. I felt that the $2.25 toll was well worth saving time, no traffic and not wasting the same money on gas (and don't worry if you don't have exact change as they have a machine to accept larger bills)!
It was an altogether great resort. The pools were well heated and we enjoyed swimming in them and also going to the beach. It was a relaxing, great vacation and I would definitely return.
