After reading some of the comments on tripadvisor we were looking forward to our stay at Piety Hill. We were aware that it's not a modern, perfectly constructed place - we like places with character.
However we were disappointed from the moment we arrived. The greeting felt like a lecture from a drill sergeant, a laundry list of what we'd have to pay for if we violated the rules - for example if we didn't wash our dishes, use towels properly, etc. There was no sense of welcome or warmth.
The woman at the desk did warn us of "a hole in the wall" made by recent guests but it wasn't like she said "bear with us" and there was no sense of apology which would have gotten us their your side -- basically she said we can't fix it now so too bad - take it or leave it - she new the whole town was sold out for a film fest and that we had no other option.
When we got to the room we found it musty and filled with strong artificial smells, from the strong scent of cleansers in the bathroom to the cloying perfume of a candle in bedroom. The candle's smell was so overpowering we put it in a plastic bag but later we noticed that the room smells musty and stale, maybe that's why the candle is there.
We also found not just the hole in the BR wall but cracks throughout the building. The shower stall is small and cramped and the water flow went from low to almost a trickle. One morning the hot water ran out when my girlfriend was in the shower. And there isn't even a glass covering over the light fixture in the bathroom, just 2 bare bulbs, which is not just unsightly, it may be unsafe.
It's clear that the inn does make an effort to keep the place clean and tidy and the grounds are nice, but the cabin we had, Maple, is run down - the carpet has long-standing stains, etc. I also couldn't get the wifi on my computer - later the manager told me the wifi is available just in the lobby which of course is closed at night when I need to check my mail.
I travel for part of my living and spend about 100 days each year on the road, both in business and leisure hotels and inns. I have a pretty good sense of what one should expect when paying $270 (plus tax) for a 2-night stay and I think what Piety provides doesn't warrant the price tag. Not even close.
