“Quaint lodge in beautiful setting”

I have driven by this place and even stopped in to check prices on previous trips to Mt. Shasta City, but after they lowered their room prices about $50 from where they were a year ago, I decided to give it a try on a January (2012) weekend night. I paid about $70 for a small, adequate room. I liked the plain, wooded decor, and found the bed quite adequate for sleeping. The place has the look of an old school backwoods lodge, which I suppose it might have been at one point. The rooms are cold, but my heater warmed the room up to an acceptable level pretty quickly. My only complaint is that I had no wi-fi signal at all in the room, and the front desk person had assured me they had wi-fi. And I was surprised that there was a little bit of paper trash in one of the waste paper baskets. However, neither of these negatives would keep me from coming back here.
They have opened a small bar and restaurant (they call it a "gastro-pub", or something like that) in the main building behind the lobby, which is convenient. They have their own sushi chef also, so I tried the California roll as an appetizer, and enjoyed it. The two servers I had were very nice and attentive, and I was happy with the cheeseburger I ordered. The entrees looked good as well. A note about breakfasts: they are no longer including continental breakfast with the room rate, but you can buy breakfast at the hotel's restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back have little road noise.

“False advertising, less than expected, find another place.”

For $70 and an almost completely empty hotel on a monday night, you'd expect a more gracious response to customer dissatisfaction. First of all, the signboard said "free continental b'fast, quiet & clean". We were put in a room at the end, with loud traffic noise. When we asked to switch, the man at the front desk was reluctant, stating there may not be any rooms with only 1 queen bed and rooms w/2 Q beds cost more. No rooms have desks/chairs. He finally found a room, in the back. You have to wait about 15 min. for the heaters to heat up the room (30F outside). When we returned from dinner, with about 30 vacant rooms, the room above ours was occupied and it sounded like a herd of elephants lived there. (At least they were quiet after 9pm.) In the morning, there was no breakfast. My husband inquired and the response was, "well we don't have many people staying. I guess I should remove that from the sign board." The only positive for this hotel is that there is ample hot water and pressure in the shower.

Room Tip: Ask for a back room and w/o guests above you.

“Bad experience, we won't go back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

For a 2.5 star rated hotel the experience was very disappointing. I wouldn't go back; here are a few reason why:
-The room was not ready when we arrived at 5pm.
-Room very small, no place to store luggage.
-Old carpet smell in the room
-Carpet and rugs had not been cleaned. Holes in the carpet.
-My wife who is allergic to dust mites started coughing as soon as we entered the room.
-Heater front panel was broken and fell to the floor when i tried to access control buttons.
-Heater made a lot of noise and kept waking us up at night.
-No phone service
-Killed a cockroach on a wall
-Towels in bathroom were not cleaned, one of them was soiled like it was used to wipe a dog
-Unprofessional personnel

Good points:
-Cabin style decored room, cozy feeling (too bad it felt unclean)
-Big flat screen in room
-Breakfast served in sister hotel across the street, was in a cozy homy kitchen, cabin style.

Try another place

Room Tip: Rooms with double queens size beds are very small

“Very Small and Basic, Yet Cute Cabin Decor.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

My family and I were going on a road trip and our first stop was Shasta. The Inn on the website looked really large and the rooms looked quite big as well. When we booked the guy on the phone was very friendly, and told us he would give us the two quiet rooms in the back. When we arrived we were a bit suprised that it wasn't as large as we thought it was. The lobby was big, but we couldn't use it b/c it was under reconstruction. When I first walked into my room it had a funny smell so I asked for another one, and the guy at the desk let me choose a new one. It was very very tiny. The website was a bit misleading, but the room was cute and cozy with a cabin decor. Nice huge TV. It was kind of odd having the sink outside of the bathroom, but it had nice fixtures. Nice soaps but my towel had a hole in it. Wasn't really a big deal. It was a bit noisy in the night, and the porch lights stayed on all night, so it was kinda of hard sleeping with the light shining through. Breakfast was at the Inn across the street, and was in a really cute old dining room, pretty basic nothing special, but the dog on the couch was really entertaining. Overall basic and cozy, clean but a few details weren't that great. Probably the best inn in the super small town though.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for extra towels, b/c some are old and ripped but they will happily give you more and...

“Cozy and Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

We were visiting Mount Shasta (me and the Mrs.) and decided to try and find a place to spend the night. We called one place, but when we got there my wife wasn't interested in staying there, so we Yelped and called the Woodsman. It was getting dark and very chilly so we really didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. The gentleman at the front desk (David) was very friendly and accommodating. He took the liberty of going to a room and starting the heater before we arrived. Check-in was quick and he let me know about the complementary breakfast across the street at the Strawberry Vally Inn, also owned by the Woodsman. At the time of visit some guys were finishing the day's efforts in the back of the office lobby -- a restaurant steakhouse is under construction.

The room was a little small, but big enough, it had a semi log cabin feel with walls of knotty pine and wood-bark molding in the corners. No stove or oven, no microwave either. The bed was very comfortable, carpet had some padding so it was better than most. There was a flat LCD television by Visio on the wall, that was nice but the wiring to the tv was an eyesore.

Bathroom had the toilet and shower. Plenty of towels and soap dispensers in the shower. There is no heating in the bathroom, so early morning the toilet seat is COLD.

The grounds are in a forest with mostly pine trees, some oaks. Nice to see the big acorns on the ground. Not much grass if you have a dog, but across the street is the other Inn -- it has a nice lawn.
