I stayed at the Hollywood Roosevelt with my family (children aged 14 and 17) in July 2011. We chose the hotel for its location opposite the Kodak Theatre as we were doing the full "tourist" Hollywood experience, the tackier the better.
The hotel exudes history, being the site for the first Oscars ceremony, and had apparently been refurbished recently, although our rooms showed a fair amount of wear and tear.
The outdoor pool area was used on two evenings for private parties when we were there - as our rooms were almost directly above the pool, this meant a couple of nights of not being able to get to sleep much before 3am - a better option may have been rooms fronting onto Hollywood Boulevard, although this would probably have been no quieter. (Next time, we will just have to go without the kids and join in all the fun).
The large galleried central space on the ground floor is a fantastic spot to sit late at night and watch the beautiful people and wannabes go by, and we ate a couple of times in the main restaurant in the hotel - Public Kitchen - the food was good and the service the best we found in the hotel.
The service at the front desk, lobby bar area, valet parking was mixed at best, and was terrible at the pool, leaving the impression that the staff had better things that they would rather be doing. We had recently been at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, so were perhaps feeling a little spoiled, but the Roosevelt's customer services manager should book a few days at the Bellagio to see how it should be done.
The Roosevelt is not cheap and not really that suitable for anyone under 21. Would I go back ? Maybe. The sense of history just about outweighs the negatives, but please do something to cheer most of the staff up.
