“Cold and dumpy”

I bought a two night stay for $99 off of dealfind. The package included a bottle of wine and a park pass. I was under no illusion that this was a five-star hotel. Im a frequent traveler, but I thought this would be a nice little romantic getaway for me and the lady.
When I got to the hotel, I noticed that no one else was staying there--fair enough. I asked how much an upgrade cost and upgraded to room with a fireplace and a jacuzzi for $75. Again, my choice, no pressure sale.
When we got to the room, it was freezing cold. It took about an hour to heat up. We took off looking for dinner because the restaurant wasn't open Mondays and tuesdays. When we got back, we started filling up the jacuzzi. One problem, the water was hot for about half the tub, and filled up the rest cold. I went to call the main desk and discovered the room had no phone. I called with my cell--roaming charges. He told me to let the tap run for wait ten minutes and the water would be warm. We did. It never got hot enough to fill up. We sat in a lukewarm, low-water jacuzzi. Later my girlfriend would not have enough hot water in the shower to rinse the soap off her hair.
Afterward, I turned on the tv to watch a dvd. The tv is 14 inch and a rear view projection. The sound was so messed up we couldnt hear talking. So, we watched the movie on my laptop. We put the laptop on the little table and both sat on the couch--a couch that must have been 30 years old, small and very uncomfortable. We then attempted to go online--you know--the whole "free wi-fi" thing. Right, I called the main desk for the password, but he told me it only worked in the little hallway of the main building. I had to trudge to the main desk at midnight to check out some park stuff online--in a cold dark hallway. We spent the night watching The Wire on my laptop. The room smelled like smoke and urine. The bed was uncomfortable.
The next morning we had breakfast in the Restaurant. Now, I want to say something. The restaurant service was amazing. The food was amazing. It made the whole trip worthwhile. In fact, we ate dinner there and the owner (not the same as the hotel owner) gave us free dessert and moved a table in front of the fireplace for my girlfriend. The food was classy.
Going back to the hotel. They didnt salt the front entrance and my girlfriend almost smashed her face. The hairdryer didnt work. A gas checker had to come into our room and check the fireplace gas meter while we were in the room. He walked and all over our room with his boots on. I almost wrote off the money and drove home after the first night.
Despite all of this crap, I was not going to say anything or ask for my money back. I was not going to write a review. We checked out and afterwards, the owner looked at me and said, "Now, what about my tip." I thought he was joking. I said, "What do you mean?" He explained, "It is customary to leave a tip and you can tip any amount you want." I said, "For what, cleaning the room?" He said, "For whatever you like." The fing gall.
We were going to eat breakfast at the awesome restaurant, but I tore a strip into the owner and told him how dumpy his hotel was and went through the laundry list of crap. He blamed the water on his property manager, and obviously did not offer any refund. Unfortunately, we left without eating breakfast.
The hotel is a total dump and they have no idea what customer service means. Pathetic.
Again, I would have just written it all off, except the owner had the stones to ask me for a tip after the bill was paid. So take heed. Avoid staying at this hotel at all costs.

Room Tip: Avoid every room at this pathetic establishment

“Do not let old reviews fool you, there are new owners now.”

I bought this stay as a 2 night deal, as I went with my child I has to pay various upgrade fees. I did so and when I went to the room I was so disappointed. The water was freezing cold, even through I ended up paying an extra 120 for an "upgrade" the room was not nice and they did not even provide enough towels for the 3 of us. The heat in the room was turned off, we had to turn it on when we went in and it took a long time until we were not freezing.
No customer services to address our issue, their so called wirless internet does not even give a signal to the rooms, no phone.
I left immediately in the morning, forfeiting my second night..I would much rather be at home in comfort than in that awful place. There are many beautiful and cost effective places in the Huntsville/Algonquin area- stay away from this one. The good ratings appear from a time when their was different ownership- the place is trash!

Room Tip: I had a lakeside room- beware the water is freezing.

“Cold Water Blues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Our usual lodging of choice was closed for some reason on the other side of the park in Whitney (they'd just had a power outage for 16 hours and a major storm, so that might have had something to do with it) so we opted to try our luck across the park. This motel is 10 km from the west gate of the park, near the village of Dwight.
It was only by chance that we met the attendant, as he was in a car leaving when we pulled in. The front door was locked even though there was a bright neon "open" sign in the window. A sheet of instructions for a guest had been taped to the glass, and a series of phone numbers should someone need a room.
By this time it was late, and I had decided against driving on to Huntsville, so we decided we would stay. The attendant was very courteous but seemed a little unsure of the property.
The rates seemed very high for the location given the time of year and the amenities, but I was tired and didn't feel like haggling.
The room was quite nice. Large, with a fridge, microwave and small tv. The beds were queen and comfortable. Two nice chairs as well. The view, which we didn't see until morning, was lovely...the Oxtongue Lake and the Hwy 60 bridge were quite beautiful.
However, there was no hot water. Not a drop. Of all the things one expects when paying resort prices, hot water is fairly near the top of the list. We had cold, and cold. No matter how long the taps ran.
Also, no Internet, high speed or otherwise, that I could find. No services, no restaurant open, no vending machines. I understand it's not the height of tourist season, but if you're going to be open and charging full rates, expect annoyed customers.
It's a nice enough place, but in the end I kind of wish we'd gone on to Huntsville. It is situated close to the west side of Algonquin, but for our purposes, hotels in Whitney (when open) are far more convenient.

Room Tip: Make sure you check the rates before you hand over your credit card. And then check again.

“Great place close to the park!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

My girlfriend and I just stayed at this place for this past weekend (late november). First I'll go over the concerns I had. The restaurant was not open at all and there was only one person working the entire weekend. The man there gave us incorrect directions to the closest restaurant which in the end turned out to be closed and we had to drive another 25 minutes (total 45) to Huntsville to eat. He also did not seem to very knowledgeable about the park or the surrounding area. The rooms were mediocre but nothing a fresh coat of paint and a carpet clean couldn't fix. On a positive note though the Inn was located right beside the park and we could not beat the price for how close we were. The Inn is also located on a beautiful river and right beside Hwy 60 which is very low traffic after 6-7 pm. The towels were clean and were changed each day and we received the daily park pass for half price. Overall we had a great time and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to spend an amazing time in Algonquin Park.

Room Tip: The suites all have a river view while the rooms (1-4) are located on the inside of the Inn lot faci...
