We were very much looking forward to the parador experience and chose the Parador de Tortosa as it seemed like a good place to start. We live a few miles away from Doncaster airport and they fly directly to Reus, about an hour and a half drive away from the parador. The parador was quite difficult to find once we were in the town of Tortosa due to road works, signage etc. However once we were there we were awestruck by its location on top of a hill and inside, it didn't disappoint. Beautifully restored, clean and the staff were very friendly. The big down side for us was the evening meal. The dinining room is magnificent, the description within the menu explained the history behind the food being served, but when it arrived it was very basic, little of it but a big bill at the end. Breakfast however was excellent, so much choice and the smaller dining room it was served in was delightful.
Tortosa town itself has nothing to offer apart from the magnificent cathedral and a railway station that runs the length of the coastal resorts, which obviously includes Barcelona.
We also booked to stay for 5 days at this parador which was our mistake, we could have stayed at Benicarlo and enjoyed the lovely beach which is very near instead of travelling all the way to it from Tortosa. Valencia is also very close to this parador.
We finished our week's holiday however at the parador Alcaniz, not too far from Tortosa but up in the hills. Again a beautifully restored monastary, very clean but food disappointing again.
What I suggest to anyone wanting to experience a parador is to do as much research as possible. In retrospect we stayed in one parador too long and that is not what the experience should be.
