I was in Bhopal last week for work. Honestly, we wanted to stay in the New City, but couldn't get a room since everything was booked for a believe a legislature meeting. Yes, we didn't book in advance bc we figured it was Wed night arrival and it's Bhopal, so there must be rooms.
So we cracked open the Lonely Planet after trying 5 hotels and headed to the Old City. Traveling for work, I prefer to stay in well, not budget hotels, but the Sonali was ok. The rooms were recently renovated and were small but tidy. They have good cable which includes English-language HBO and free wi-fi. Surprisingly enough, the bed was really comfy. Foam mattress, so I slept well.
Ok, so the crappy thing was that after checking in, went to the bathroom, lifted the seat lid and eeeew! there was pee in the toilet! I freaked, told the management, who profusely apologized, said they were going to find out who cleaned the room, then promptly sent someone up to clean. After that, everyone, including in the manager was quite attentive and friendly, not that they would've have been, but they seemed eager to make a better impression.
Also, if you are adventurous and needing a bar (not too many in Bhopal), there's a little hold-in-the wall down the block from the hotel. Actually, it's a little room connected to the liquor store. They just have beer on tap at Rs35 (!) and no seats. As a woman, I was TOTALLY out of place and probably making everyone uncomfortable, but I was with a male colleague so the staring from others was kept to a minimum.
