We have split personalities when we travel to the DR. There are times that we enjoy going to our favorite AI in Punta Cana, but our most favorite trips are when we venture out on our own. This past March we stayed in Cabarete for six days and then headed down to Puerto Plata for the remainder of our vacation. Birgit was great with communication during the planning stages. The only criticism and it is really not a big deal was that I had asked for a taxii to pick us up at the airport, but we ended up getting our own. Like I said no big deal, we have been traveling to the DR for over 10 years so we pretty much can handle getting our own taxi. Also there was no one really there to "check" us in, but if you are a veteran traveler to the DR this is not a huge deal either. Our room was comfortable, the pool was great and location, location, location. A short walk out of the neighborhood and you were right in town or at the beach, but it was also nice to know that after an evening out you could retire to a peaceful environment. It rained for 3 days and the road could be a mess, but it rains at home as well. Rates were great, breakfast hit the spot and everyone staying there either short or long term were quite friendly. The only thing I would suggest and this just may be because we experienced cool temps and rain was I wish we would have had a blanket instead of just the sheet. On the subject of Cabarete vs. Puerto Plata, I think I still go with PP, basically because we have friends in the area, but I am glad we experienced Cabarete and the Residencia Dominicana and I would stay there again as well as recommend it to anyone looking for a safe and enjoyable experience outside the AI experience.
