We too got this deal on Living Social and boy are we ever glad we did. We just rented a car and drove from Playa del Carmen where we live for several months a year. The car rental worked out to only $31/day, but it still would have been cheaper to take the ADO, but we stayed a night in Tulum both on the way down and the way up- made it special. I would recommend doing this if you are doing a 'road trip' type of holiday. The resort was truly amazing. Our cabana had its very own pool (4 ft deep) but it was cold- that was the only negative thing about the suite. It was over 900 sq feet (HUGE) and we had our own backyard, though no furniture. You would never use the backyard anyway, as the patio/porch out front was massive with hammocks and loungers. We did ask the staff to put hot water into our pool for one day, but it was only on the surface, so when you stood up, your feet hit the very cold water below.
NO mosquitos- or very very few, so I think it's the time of year that you go. If you go later in the year, I am sure the pool is warm, but the mosquitos I am sure would be bad, as others have said.
The trips/excursions were nice, but not very adventurous- but really it's not like you are in the amazon! We did enjoy them. Most of the equipment is in good shape, though the bikes are not maintained, no grease on the chains etc. Still that did not take away from the 'adventures'- it almost made it more fun.
The staff is amazing!!!! It's wonderful to see that they still speak mostly spanish- when you are in Cancun you almost forget you are in Mexico because so much English is spoken. No matter how much spanish you know or don't know, you can make yourself understood.
Open bar was well stocked and fun to make up drinks,
All the food was exceptional. I had the best ceviche I have ever eaten there. And the cheese/rich filling stuffed bread in the morning was heavenly. The 'low cal' calabasa (squash) omlette was also amazing.
Met some fantastic people, and yet you didn't feel like you were surrounded, or paired up for dinner and couldn't get away- like on cruise ships. The hot tub was a great place to meet and talk about your day- like the last guys said, ask the staff to warm up the tub, at least for us it was cool at night.
The actual price of our cabana was $7,700 pesos PER DAY-- not sure if I would have paid that, but on the deal, it was a GREAT PRICE and would for sure buy the package again.
