“Large room/small breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

After the greatly overpriced $7US taxi trip from the airport, it was nice to relax in this spacious hotel in New Bagan. Bagan is composed of 2 adjacent villages, New and Old Bagan. New Bagan is less oriented towards tourism, and a little further from the main Bagan archaeological sites. Good to arrange a taxi or horse and cart ("horse-cat") in advance, as transport can be difficult, since the hotel is a little ways out of town. Bicycles are available at the hotel, but we 4 walked most places. The best feature of the hotel is its swimming pool, welcome after a long and dusty day of temple visits. The room we had was spacious, with a double bed (2 adults) and a single bed (one child). Our second child slept in a sleeping bag on the floor. The sofa cushions made a usable bed. It seemed no extra beds were available. Rooms are air-conditioned, and also have an overhead fan. The separate bathroom is large, with washbasin, toilet, and a shower recess large enough for all the family! The hot water takes a little while to come on, so be patient. Take some mosquito repellent or spray; while the windows have screens, the doors do not, and these little critters (not so little!), take every opportunity to get in and feast on you during the night. There are a few good restaurants within walking distance, a day market, and a small grocery store (Diet Coke, Soda, bread, coffee, etc); from the hotel entrance, turn left and walk downhill to the center of town. For some, breakfast would be a disappointment, being a piece of fruit, fried eggs or omelet and toast, and coffee (choose your 3-in-one mix!). The staff however are charming and as helpful as they can be, despite some communication problems, which are common throughout Myanmar. Horse and cart tours, and other transport can be arranged with hotel reception. This hotel seems to be favored by Burmese tourist groups (large and extended families), and when we were there, there were only a few Western and Japanese couples.

Room Tip: If you are looking for quiet, it may be best to choose a "wing" room (far LHS or far RHS o...

“Return customer several times. I will go back again.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2011

I love this hotel. It is such a nice haven. After a hot day in Began it's nice to go back to the hotel and swim before the dinner. The hotel is wonderful and spacious beatuful setting around the pool to relax. I would not stay anywhere else in Began. I also visited one of the resorts and I like the Arthawka much better at a fraction of the cost.

“average standard hotel, no character, far from the Old Bagan”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2010

The only few things I like is the service of staffs, a small pool and located in a real quiet village close to a very very nice restaurant 'Welcome'.

It can accommodate a big group of tourist with big lobby and canteen. But I was there alone, food was fresh and nice prepare but there did not use real butter. Toilet decorate with white tiles feel like staying in a hospital. The air-con and warm water works well without any problem during the two night stay.

“Great Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2007

Stayed for 5 nights while on an organised ( individual) tour of Myanmar.
Bagan is very quiet in the off season so mostly had the hotel to ourselves. This place was a wonderful haven. Its modern, spacious and well appointed for a three star hotel in the third world.

The staff couldn't have done more for us. The heat was extreme, so every chance I had I was in the pool. Someone - it didn't matter if it was at sunrise or late at night - would appear to make sure I had a pool towel.
Food and service was impeccable.

The hotel manager is a young Sri Lankan chap, keen to have someone to speak english with and he has trained up a great staff. Smiles, courtesy and attentive and efficient.

I wanted to use the internet - the hotel doesn't have a computer. So the manager loaned me a bike and took me into the little township of New Bagan to what passes for an internet cafe in this part of the world.
Great service.
