We called the hotel to make our reservation early afternoon, speaking to a very pleasant gentleman, leading us to look forward to our stop in Ajmer and even planning a couple of things to do in Ajmer the next day.
After being greeted by a really, genuinely rude man on reception, who very clearly did not want us in his hotel - a couple of weeks later somebody told me that this type of place do not want foreigners to stay because they have to submit extra paperwork - we at least thought the room might make up for it.
Let me just say that had we not arrived at 11pm, there is no way we would have accepted either of the rooms that we saw to stay in, especially at R800 a night. The floor was dirty. The bed sheets were filthy - we could only sleep on the bed because we had brought a blanket with us (apologies British Airways, but your blanket did come in handy). The shower didn't run. It was noisy. I'm not sure what else to say. Backpackers and foreign travellers avoid.
